Things to Do Firearms Related While Self Quarantined At Home

I’ve taken the boys target shooting (we have a range in the back field, so we’re still following the stay at home request).

They are keeping journals of their at home learning...i’m having them count this towards their sports / PE time.

I’m going to try to work windage and bullet drop into a physics lesson...

A session at the reloading bench would be a good chance to develop written procedures...technical writing...

Exercise should come first.
I'm going to make a hand for a revolver. Factory was mild steel. I'm going to use a grade 8 bolt and slowly file it to shape. It should take about 2 weeks.
Not to talk down to you but look to see that you don't file it into a degree of magnetism. Even grade-8s can be mildly magnetic and that can be heightened by filing.

If it is coming to be, your filings will let you know. Easy enough to undo and especially by the time the piece is as small as a hand.

Todd.

Yesterday I (68 with underlying medical condition) grudgingly gave in to my families pleas to stay at home. So I'm done with going out for awhile.

I dug around in the drawer where I keep my cast off and unused firearms accessories and found a Burris Fastfire 3 that needed a battery and some empty speed loaders for my Smith revolvers. I'll be taking off the budget optic I have on my EVO Scorpion carbine and replacing it with the Burris.

Did my ammo inventory last weekend and found I had a lot more than I thought. Need to do some cleaning but I'm out of Hoppe's.

Hoping this is over before I get cabin fever.

Thanks for the heads up. I usually weld up parts and file them into shape.
My old mig died and I haven't replaced it.
I've never magnetized metal by filling, so I must have not done it enough.

Reloading some 30-30's for myself with a load I saw in the April issue of American Rifleman. Reloading some 6.5 PRC for my buddy. Took a walk in the woods today to swap SD cards on some trail cams. Removed the Holographic sight from my Ruger PC Carbine, ( I like the irons it came with). Got a couple guns due for their 6 month clean & check routine; if it hasn't been shot in 6 months it still gets a light cleaning & wipe down. Times like this I'm glad I'm retired.

So much to do and plenty of time to do it for a change.
I started the other day by cleaning out my gun room. It's amazing what a person forgets that they have stashed.
I found a boot box on the top shelf. Pulled it down and said "Wow, these are some heavy boots!" Inside, 800 rounds of 9mm. about a100 .223 and a couple partial boxes of 32 H&R Mag.
Ill explore more tomorrow.

I have already cleaned and oiled most everything, but I do need to install my short reset kit in one of my CZ's

After that, I really should get all the reloading equipment thats been sitting in the shop set up and put to use.

As I said. Lots to do, and plenty of time to do it.

You've probably changed orientation and filing direction enough to avoid it.

When you get down to the final filing, before stoning is the only time you might magnetize it to any degree that could ultimately matter. The roughing out doesn't matter at all - only the end. And even then - varying the technique usually quashes that issue. But demagnetizing a hand is not hard. Just that if there is any magnetism to it it might present like a weakened spring or fitting-drag when in fact the part can be perfect.

My plan... not to get quarantined. But since work is shut down...

Fabricate thumb rest on my CZ-85. Maybe order a barrel and comp.
Fabricate thumb rest on my Mock 34. Maybe order a comp. Just got to get around to it.
Mounting a vise to my second work bench. Was given an old Harbor Freight type ("Allied" brand, whoever marketed those) multi-use vise. Massive, and hopefully useful.

Pull ups. Lots and lots of pull ups. And maybe mow the lawn.

Really wish I had one of those about now.

I've got an iTarget Pro that works well.

Target runs off an app on your phone (that I hear doesnt work well with the new iPhones) and the "sled" is unnessary if you have any other method of holding your phone still, like a selfie stick tripod or what not

Promo code: Dan will get you 10% off your order.

Edit: it doesn't work with my Glock 26 for whatever reason, no matter since I just put it up on consignment.

I'm planning to catch up on reading my gun magazines-I'm at least a couple of years behind (to include Guns & Ammo, American Rifleman, Gun Tests, Shooting Sportsman, Shooting Times, American Handgunner, Guns, and three back issues of Gun Digest).
