Things to Do Firearms Related While Self Quarantined At Home

I'm just now finishing a batch of 12k 9mm rounds.

After that, I need to assemble an AR pistol lower that has been languishing in the safe.

I just finished changing the slings on my training AR and tactical shotgun.

I need to do some more practice on my home pistol plate rack. With pistols and my Scorpion Evo SBR.

Finally, I have probably 15k range pickup .223/5.56 cases that need to be sorted, cleaned, and processed. And neighbors have at least 10k more. The 1050 will get a workout in coming days!

I inventoried my ammo supply. Am still cleaning all the guns I haven't gotten around to cleaning since their last field trips. Watching gun TV shows on the outdoor networks on DirectTV. Actually picked up a couple gun rags at the store to read. Maybe gonna buy another safe shortly.

Have indoor and outdoor ranges here and utilize them right much. But, I dryfire practice a LOT! My favorite "target" is this white, little bigger than a softball, rock out in the field as seen from the loading room window. It ranges 150yds.

I keep an 80's R700V with a 6-18 Redfield, and a 2# trigger ready to dryfire practice with. Have "shot" that dang rock a thousand times, haha.

Reload, clean and inventory. I’ve got a couple of rifles I want to bed. We’ve got a farm, so there’s plenty I can do without leaving the property. I’m one of the lucky ones in that aspect.

...calculating how many Christmas babies there are going to be...

These days with so many parents only being used to seeing their kids at night for dinner or on the weekends, assuming they don’t work Sat or Sun, I think having them around 24/7 and not being used to that, might increase contraceptive use. ;)

I thought while I was off work it would be a good time to melt some lead and start casting.

Fired up my pot, a few minutes later the breaker tripped. Pot shorted to ground. Darn it. Gonna tear it apart today to see if I can fix it.

according to the spreadsheet, I have 9 guns that are overdue for their last shot +365 cleaning.

Speedo - I am envisioning "the Thinker" as we speak.

(No - Not off topic ; that is what I am doing while self quarantined .. thinking of Thinker while on THR)
Of course, I remember that from the show! lol

We should all be doing some extra thinking at this point, especially on staying safe.

I got a bunch of gun cleaning to do, and I've been lazy. I'm working remotely and as a result my hours have been screwy, as I'm now responding to issues at all hours, it seems. This weekend I hope to be able to hit the outdoor range (still open) and take a hike or two (unless they tell us to shelter in place). Maybe I'll pick one firearm per day and take my time with it, detail strip and do a very thorough job.

I’ve taken the boys target shooting (we have a range in the back field, so we’re still following the stay at home request).

They are keeping journals of their at home learning...i’m having them count this towards their sports / PE time.

I’m going to try to work windage and bullet drop into a physics lesson...

A session at the reloading bench would be a good chance to develop written procedures...technical writing...

Smart dad

I am bringing home a fair size load of large rocks tomorrow. I am thinking about making a campfire ring with them. There is nothing like sitting outdoors making smores and bouncing red and green laser beams on our guns off of trees.

The beams look cool in the smoke too.

I'm sitting here on a planned vacation day and its been raining outside for hours. I spent last night dry firing (w/ snap caps) a few revolvers while watching an old movie called Border Incident. Specifically my H&R 999, Ruger GP100, and Ruger Bearcat Shopkeeper.

My to do list for the remainder of today is:
- Prep a gun for possible trade in fodder
- Check and lube two guns that don't sit in a climate controlled environment
- Shoot my Crosman 2260 and 1377 air guns in my garage at newspaper packed targets
- Resist the urge to take the aforementioned trade in fodder gun with me to local gun shops o_O

I am fortunate to live in a rural area with my own range. I ran a couple mags through my carry gun yesterday then spent some time running a bunch of old reloads through my 1911 .45 200gr LSWC
Did some cleaning and sorting. Even threw out some old BLC powder that was smelling past its prime. I have no shortage of components or loaded ammo.
I might pick through my scrap metal and weld up some interesting targets just for something else to do.
And I want to finish dialing in a load for my .308 bolt rifle and get the scope turrets laser etched for it. I'll have one load 125gr for varmints and another for a 165gr hunting load for deer/elk and an elevation turret set up for each. Something I've wanted to do for about 5 years and never seemed to get around to it.

I've got a large amount of once fired .308 to resize, trim and polish. Whilst i self isolate i don't have to stay indoors as my nearest neighbor is a mile and a half away and i live out in the forest. As the weather is set to be fine for the next week I'll be out with the chainsaw and brush cutter. I'll fit in a bit of practice with the .22 plus there are wild boar to hunt. I don't think I'll be bored in the near future.

I have to provide transportation for family members so still getting out. Did spend a rainy Wednesday making some 9mm ammo on the old 550B. Sorted, organized and straightened up the supply/storage area too. Found I have 500 LWC 38 bullets that I'd forgotten about. o_O
:)

Like many of you, I'm doing an inventory of some components. Found a thousand percussion caps I forgot I had bought last year. Then there's prepping brass and some reloading. Also, I'll be doing some re-reading of firearms related material: Elmer Keith's "Sixguns" (never gets old), Mark A. Baker's "A Pilgrim's Journey", and back issues of Muzzleloader magazine.

Still working - ours is the only library in the lower Rio Grande Valley that's still open - but that probably won't last.
I've lined up several re-stocking jobs, some bedding work, picked up about three hundred pounds of lead for casting and a bunch of sorting and maintenance.
