Remington 870 Magazine tube blocked? Metal crimp not dowel

Drive a slug of steel that has a taper and max OD that is is a close fit to the tube's ID through the tube to swag the dent out. This is the best option.

The old part that was used to keep everything inside the magazine tube was friction fit metal. It was replaced with the plastic piece you see when you look in the end. The plastic piece is held in by those two dimples. Some people use a Dremel & grind off the bump from the inside. Others use a drill and drill out the bump. There may be other ways.

Drill a hole there with the appropriate size drill bit.

Love the shotgun but this is dumb.

Only if you want to add a mag extension. The indent is there to hold the magazine cap in place. It is actually a much less expensive, and much better way to accomplish this than the older method. If you want to add a mag extension it is easily removed.

No, it is not the best option. It is the worst option. Has it been done successfully? Yes. Is it worth the attempt? NO; Remington magazine tubes are brazed in, and if you crack that brazing, you have a parts gun on your hands. DRILL the crimps out if you must, then touch the holes up. Be warned you will lose the tension retainer for the forearm doing this. The only way to be sure it stays tight after doing so is using an old style barrel and either the old cap, or if the new cap is the dual use type.

They make tool to do it with if you don't want to make the swag yourself.

Not cheap but it works well. Get a few buddies with 870s to pitch in together. You can also use it to remove any other dents that might happen if the gun gets damaged.

The procedure I mentioned came from a Remington trained LE Armorer, as well from as a former Remington rep. Both recommend drilling.
The best option is to buy a Wingmaster or Police that does not have the dents to begin with.

And I know the guy the setup and ran the LE armor school up in Ilion. We don't always agree...

@entropy , my apologies, I did not mean to be flippant with my responses to you. Drilling holes probably is the easiest and safest way to do it. I just personally don't like drilling holes in a tube like that if it can be avoided. Swagging out the bumps is harder and requires more equipment to do it right without damaging the rest of the receiver. I think it results in a better solution but it is certainly not the easiest solution to impliment.

Looks like the XS is designed to suit your needs for now. The Brownells is for dings at any point of the tube, like if you were to dent the middle of the tube by dropping it.

The cheaper one is only really for taking the factory dimples out of the magazine tube, or repairing damage near the very end. The more expensive tool will work for what you need or taking any other dent out of the tube anywhere along its length if its been damaged. As entropy points out the magazine tube is brazed to the receiver so for a gunsmith having this tool to remove dents makes sense since repairing the existing tube is usually the better option since brazing a new tube in required refinishing the receiver.

I am rambling... I would go with the cheaper tool unless you think you will utilize the more capable tool.

I know lots of folks want extended magazine tubes on their fighting shotguns... Me, not so much at all... Hope y'all reach a satisfactory solution but I'll keep my four shot tube. I like it just fine...

Capacity is king! :D

Ugly guns on an ugly rug.

Remington 1100 10+1 (11+1 with some brands).

Browning BPS 9+1 (8+1 with 3-inch, and 7+1 with 3.5-inch)

Yes I did the ugly paint jobs on both.

@mcb What sights are on your 1100? I have a +10 on mine but it hits really low now. I guess I need to add adjustable sights.

NVM My barrel doesn't have a rib. I guess I'm SOL

Yeah they are Williams Universal Firesight Slugger. Yeah its going to be hard to find aftermarket sights for a shotgun without a vent rib. That said this is not the original barrel on that 1100. I bought it used with a 30-inch full choke barrel and put the 26-inch barrel with choke tubes on it. The stocks finish had a lot of water damage (someone's duck gun I would guess) so I gave it a paint job.
