Why is there a gun and ammo panic now?

It's not my saying, I think it was on the movie "Men in Black", but it is true. A person is smart. People are dumb, panicking, dangerous animals. That is why they horde and panic buy. They see their neighbors by one, they buy two, another guy buys three, then boom.... out of control. Just my 2 cents.

People are terrified. Every gold dealer is sold out of coins, bars, whatever. Every grocery story has been pillaged. Banks have seen a huge spike in cash withdrawals. P100 respirators that you could buy at a hardware store 6 weeks ago for $35 are going on ebay for $500. Prisons are releasing criminals and police departments are publicly saying they will not respond to calls that don't involve someone being hurt or killed. Whole states are issuing shelter in place orders.

If you didn't have a gun, you would want one.

There is also the concern of exactly what has happened. Democommies trying to add nonemergency agendas to emergency bills.
The possibility that some will try to keep societal control items in place after it is over.
Like having forced gun shops to close then making a push to keep them close along with public ranges.

I watched an interview with one gun store manager. He said this "gun run" was different than the one after Sandy Hook. He called that a "political buying rush" as in: "They are going to outlaw certain guns and ammo, I'll buy mine now for various reasons. As a protest. To get grandfathered in. To speculate on, whatever". He said this time was more a self defense type buying rush. The first thing gone was his shotguns, followed by handguns, followed by rifles, as well as ammo for them. He said a lot were first time gun owners and scared, or at least deeply worried.

All I know is I'm making some money. I'm not retiring off of folks. But making a little bit from being prepared. I'll use this money to buy more when things calm down.

Here is another factor. It was not so long ago people lived through a 3 year dearth of rimfire ammo. And so you know how it can be when the ground rumbles.

Also we are not prepared at all for a large volcanic eruption or meteor strike either if which would put enough particulate matter into the air to prohibit traditional corn/soybeans for at least three years. Is there a perpetual cold season crop plan for US agriculture? Foodstuffs for cattle? Is the source of cool season crop seed available? Or are we just going to let millions starve?

7ad.jpg ....Let's "get down to it", so to speak...................novice gun owners seem to anticipate doing This on their house roof in a few months?
Or carrying an AR or AK as they pace back and forth like a tiger on their front lawn?
These were determined Korean business owners Above their shops, during the LA Race Riots.

Quite different than just being in a home (most homes now always occupied) which is Not known to store cash?

In many areas the police no longer respond to many crimes. This was before then panic. Now it's worse. I fear that soon law enforcement in the US will be almost worthless in regards to anything but major crimes.

I blame Progressives and their Social Justice agenda for this.

And sheriffs across the country are opening the jails and releasing prisoners. are we having fun yet?

In my part of the woods their already worthless, their job is to protect and serve the establishment not us . With our money ! ....

I understand in years past the rush to buy guns and ammo .When the political winds shift or we face natural disasters people want to be prepared . Storms, power outages and civil unrest are really trying times and can bring out the worst in people.
The corona virus is a difficult situation for sure but I don't see anyone breaking into my house to steal my toilet paper. I don't have the cure and nothing I can do to help you.
Perhaps it's just a crowd mentality thing.
Maybe I am not feeling it because I already own guns and would feel the need if I had nothing.
Just my .02

As said, I think this one goes deeper. I’m seeing my anti-2A neighbors buying guns (in fact, I’ve helped to guide a few of them towards proper storage devices). With new guns, comes new ammo. There is a disruption in a global routine...stay-at-home orders, restricted shopping, closures.....as well as a general fear of illness and resource shortages. This causes panic. Some respond by preparing further/more intensely and some respond by throwing societal norms out the window. Driving around to a few groceries yesterday (stores had plenty of TP, btw....I didn’t even bother buying), you would have thought the Toe Cutter was driving every other car. You can sense the panic. Although Ohio’s LGS are considered essential, the lines have been so bad that they are closing their doors and selling on-line with parking lot pick-up. I’m in healthcare and my panic is real and earned. My panic comes from when (not if) Covid-19 hits my facilities, how long will it be before too many staff are sick and can’t take care of the patients. Picture our soldiers knowing about the attack on Pearl Harbor for a month in advance, re-routing the anti-aircraft to the European Front and issuing each soldier one clip of ammo for their Garand. That being said, you would be amazed at the vast numbers of $12/hour nurse aides still coming to work each day, putting themselves and their families at risk to care for people. Brings a tear to the eye.

Why is there a gun and ammo panic now?

governments are panicking, states reps, etc. Ppl are simply following the trend...and they are being led to do.

We could be looking at a different political climate come November as well...
Nope. Once that all magical drug of...cash gets into their veins, the opiate of politics, they will vote one way. IMO, part of all this is to buy political influence, among the average populace

The interesting thing, however, is seeing them discover just how hard it is to legally buy a gun in 2020. They're amazed it's not like they were led to believe.
Well finally, a cloud with its silver lining. Hope they remember when they vote, contact their Reps, etc

Seems to me to be a culmination of underlying factors with one big, fat one on top.
Lost faith in our government being able to work together to solve problems? Check...
Drug use rampant in your community? Check
Never learned to be able to do without? Check
Got some extra jingle from tax return? Check
Economy faceplanting? Check
Not sure how bad it is since you no longer know who to believe? CHECK
I'd probably want a gun or two myself...

Panic buying is mostly about control. People can`t control the virus, what the government orders us to do, but people can control what they buy and that is exactly what they are doing. They are exerting the only control they have.

Me, I never worried about this latest panic because I have been prepared for many years.

Oh, I forgot that everything is Trump's fault, comrade.
So much for no political or COVID19 threads...
Politicians are going to do politics, it's what they do. Both parties are doing it even if your flavor of media tells you otherwise.

Reality, what a concept..'Socialism'..what do ya think this $2 TRILLION package is?
I guess deficits really DON'T matter. or..how long does it take the Fed to print $2 TRILLION...

To keep this a little closer to on-topic - people think about public safety services getting thin during a crisis. What does a person in Houston start to think when they read that several police officers tested positive for the covid-19 virus. It takes little imagination to see the wheels turn in their heads... "I need to get a gun."
