Howdy everyone,

Well with all of the stay at home time I’m getting when I’m not at work. I am starting to re access my Ammo situation. (Note I am not nor will I promote panic buying/hoarding) I am thinking to myself that when this is all over I need to add a little more than I have been to my personal stash.

Now due to the recent changes in the World is anyone else thinking the same?

As I have noted recently on another similar thread, I have plenty of ammo from the Sandy Hook panic (3.02 x 10 to the 23rd plus the speed of light squared round count) - I panicked and I hoarded and my warehouse is overflowing with 18 lifetimes of supply. I was guilty last round but not this round - I wonder if past insanity is neutralized by present sanity?

I mostly roll my own these days, and have all the components I need to last a while. I could do with a bit more 9mm. I prefer shooting my revolvers and load for .357, .44, and .45LC. But I wouldn't mind some more 9mm, which I don't load for.

I was in pretty good shape in 2008, but since then every time I shoot I replace what I just shot, and buy a box or 2 more. Not enough to break the bank at any one time, but over the period of 10 years or so I have a decent amount of ammo for what I shoot as well as reloading components for the ones I load for.

I also narrowed my choices. I shoot mostly 12 ga, 9mm, 308, 22 RF, and 223. Ammo is cheap, even good ammo, and readily available for those. I have a few other options in rifles and handguns, but I don't shoot them in volume, and if I did run out of ammo for them there isn't anything I couldn't do with the basics I have.

I have plenty of ammo to get me through but I do wish I had stocked up a little more on reloading supplies, powder and bullets, before the panic. Will do when this is over. I will make sure I have some 8 lb jugs on hand just in case. I had just ordered 500 each of 9mm and .223 bullets from Everglades Ammo and have enough powder to reload those but would like to have just a little more. Live and learn.

Not really. I have helped a few out already though, that didn’t know any better. I guess if we hit a new iceage I can heat my igloo with gunpowder and animal fat but I’ve been buying since only idiots did it.

My Grandparents called it “saving for a rainy day”, kids these days call it “hoarding”. Then again a squirrel that puts pecans in the dirt when there are too many to eat is better off than a kid that can’t eat if taco bell is closed...

Actually, due to the timing of this thing I've got more on hand than I'll probably need.

Normally this time of year I'm pretty heavy in to reloading for upcoming matches. I stock up to insure I've got enough components to get through the post hunting season, but weather's still crappy blues. So I do most of my bulk purchases; bullets, primers, & powder in the fall during the sales. I'll drop $600 or so at a time when the on-line dealers have their free hazmat specials.

So I've got plenty on hand, buuuuuuuut now matches are being cancelled.

I bought a tonne of supplies for this exact type of thing panic. Doubled my money on a few things. Gave a few box's of 9mm away. And a couple extra AR mags. And my wife said I was nutz for spending all that money on ammo and mags. And got to meet some interesting folks. Pointed the new gun owners here and to Targetsportsusa for ammo when this is all over.

I reload so when there are deals on components I buy. A couple of chamberings that I don't load for I buy when there are deals also. So I am always stocked up .

Roll my own and I cast, so I made sure in the last couple years to stock up. I realized as the pandemic started in China that I needed more 22 and bought it. More recently I realized that real black powder is very hard to actually buy and once the few online sellers are out that may be it for a while. So I made sure to get some and some percussion caps. All set for the foreseeable.

I'm pretty low on components due to large amounts of reloading the last few months.
I am not too concerned due to the massive amounts of loaded ammo i have on hand.

got enough to keep me busy for the rest of the year.

Anyone old enough to remember the Great Obama Ammo Scare of 2012 should have had as much ammo on hand as you could afford and safely store. If not, well.......

For you youngins, let this be a lesson for ya when its over.

Im curious if our friends and members in the Mormon community have any shortages in either food or ammo. Its my understanding that stocking up for these situations is a tenant of their faith?

Well I've got nearly 300 rounds loaded up for my 7mm08, 600 223, and a little over 100 for my 9mm. I could use more, but in the 4 months leading up to the new year work was slow and was only working 4 days a we instead of 6 so money was tight. Then I was laid off so I couldn't restock, but if I'm careful I'll get through OK.

We've talked about stocking up here since forever. Unless you had an economic hardship, everyone here should be in good shape.

Now is not the time to be panic buying.

I reload all of my centerfire, unless I can get a great deal on M193. I try to keep a year's supply of components and rimfire on hand. When there is a shortage, I don't panic-buy, I plan to shoot less until it is over, run a little low, or a combination. As long as all my boxes and magazines can be filled when I get back from the range, I don't get too worked up.

I’m thinking I’ll need to buy more components to maintain my stockpile. But more ammo? No. I don’t need more room in my house taken up. I load a few thousand rounds. Then I shoot them. Then I load more. I keep around 1000-2000 rounds on hand for every cartridge I shoot and components enough to replenish that.

A couple of questions to ponder. How much AMMO in stock is "enough"? And, will the amount vary according to the action type of the firearm involved? For example, would a semi auto require more rounds to be on hand than a bolt action rifle?

My AR (sadly, recently lost in a boat accident falling in to a bottomless lake) might use 200 rounds per outing, whereas my hunting rifle might live off the same box of ammo for 3 - 4 years. That would include sighting-in and actual hunting.

To answer your question, I am happy with what I have but seeing everyone's reaction to the current crisis it has me wondering about stocking up just a little more.

Yes, I am reassessing things. I followed my own advice to others and put some budget toward having ammo on hand over the last few years during a period where it's cheaper and more plentiful than it's likely ever to be again. Now I'll probably hold off on buying until we see where the new floor is on prices.

As the old saying goes, the things you can depend....

Death

Taxes

Idiots that never learn (the ant and the grasshopper)

Panic shortages/panic buying

Since I’ve got four 2 1/2 foot by 5 foot drawers full of ammo, plus two large drawers full of bullets and 13k primers, plus probably 20k of brass and 40# of powder, plus maybe 10k of .22’s, guess I’m set

Get into reloading. Buy bullets 1,000 at a time, powder in 8# jugs, primers by the sleeve (one thousand). With my Dillon I can pretty easily crank out 500 an hour, and they’re far more accurate than most factory offerings and cheaper.

I learned my lesson last time around. Realistically I am in very good shape this time around. However, I'm still fairly new to shooting (relative to most of you anyway), and am still building up my collection and adding calibers. I'm not as well situated as I'd like on a particular caliber I just started in on, but I have enough. I shouldn't really be hanging around the club during "stay at home" anyway, so I won't really be using any of my stash. I do plan on placing a good-sized order with RMR as soon as funds allow - mainly because I need something to do to hold back cabin fever :D

So to answer the question directly... Yes, I will be adding more to my stash when this is over. But that's primarily due to adding new calibers, not being unprepared with existing calibers.

So, can you offer a BALL PARK ($$$) idea of the cost involved with getting into a set-up like you have?
