Ammo crisis ‘pears to be over.....

Hoarders aren't shooters, wouldn't want to use what they've got. I have a friend who hoarded ammo worse than anyone in history and most at panic pricing back 8n '13-'14. He hasn't been to the range one single time since then because he doesn't want to shoot his gold. I tried telling him the ammo situation is fine so many times over the years and he just says it cost him too much to shoot.this guys in his 50s, I guess he plans to keep it until he dies. Hopefully the rest of the hoarders are like him and just don't keep buying.

This sounds like good news, I wish I had an academy nearby. I have a Runnings and their prices are always high, their ammo is priced like you would see in a smaller mom and pop outfit. $425+ for a case of federal .223 6 months ago when these same cases were going sub $300 anywhere online with free shipping. Their pistol ammo is also very pricey.

$27 for 150rds of 9mm is reasonable, I hope it levels off soon with online retailers soon. I had to purchase 500rds of Brown Bear for $157 with tax and shipping just to have some ammo to shoot this summer. I tried to order from bass pro the other day but they said they weren't expecting to have 9mm in stock for 60 days.

Maybe true for some but I've learned my lesson a few times over. I used to buy and shoot alot and didnt "hoard" any but then when some stupid panic rolled around I had nothing and if I wanted to shoot had to pay rip off prices. I think it only makes sense to stack it deep and cheap when you can and never leave yourself with nothing. I wouldnt shoot up all the ammo I bought when it was cheap during a time of panic.

But the price gouging has just begun! Sportsmans outdoor super store jacked up their price on 50 rounds of Sellier and Bellot 45 acp from 12.89 just 2 weeks ago up to 21.99 now! I've given them tons of business in the past but will never buy from them ever again.

My concern is that the supply might not be getting replenished if the ammo workers are being told to stay home. I don't know if ammo manufacturing is considered a "life sustaining business" in the states where most of it is produced.

Rant on
I work p/t in a lgs.
I despise the hoarder/panicker type.Everything that has gone on since 911 and these bozo's are not ready? Or still greedy. I got 5K of every caliber on the shelf since 95. Simple formula - buy 2 - shoot one - whether it be box, brick, battle pack or case.
I Don't go to Starbucks, have a $1000 phone, ordrive a benz and still live real good. Priorities gentlemen!I
A pox on all the hoarders! I'm not nice to them and you should not be either.
When did wash your hands, and stay out of crowds become hoard toilet paper and ammo!!!I
Rant off!

By definition, hoarding is keeping things you won't use, or more than you need. Keeping enough on hand for times of limited supply isn't hoarding.
If you shoot 1000 rounds a year. But you stock pile more than 10000 rounds, you might be a hoarder.

Are you assuming that their replacement cost has remained static?

Bikedoc,
Be glad you never bought a money pit Mercedes. They are way over rated. I know from personal experience.

I made it through all of the panic`s buying a little ammo here and a little ammo there. Now at this current time I have an ammo supply that is second to none.

@GAF, we can drink beer together brother, And make fun of Skippy McPanic face!:D

I think a lot of folks buying weren't planning leisurely shooting range trips. I think it was a combo of new owners who were worried and bought guns and enough ammo as suggested by the guy at the counter and doomers (not preppers) that had visions of fending off roving bands of criminals wanting to break into their homes through all doors and windows and buying bricks and bricks for it.

I pretty much knew that government run gun ranges and indoor ranges are considered pretty much closed for the foreseeable future. I saw no need to buy a lot of range ammo as I probably won't get to shoot for months. I bought a three extra boxes of 12 gauge 00 just to have a few on hand, so I guess I panic bought 15 shells:D. I did that just because it put me right at 100 rounds, and I had no lower recoil shells for my wife to use. I just dont see the need to stock up right now. I've got nowhere to shoot and I'm pretty full up as it is.

...or easing off anyway.
Just noticed the 1000 rounds of .223 I bought last week has gone down $50 from the same vendor

Yeah, you don’t want to be the guy buying $400 AR”s for $600 or $12 P mags for $100. ;)

Getting hosed for $50 isn’t too bad considering you waited until the boat took off to jump on board.

Good post.

These last few years for me has been more like “buy 5, shoot 1”, since I’m really trying to build up the stack for when my income goes down in retirement.

But my goal is that these rounds be fired by either my wife and I, or friends and family we bring to the range with us. But ind Not buy during panics...I buy when it’s cheap and plentiful. I’ve got room to store and am too cheap to buy at premium prices or fight crowds for it.

Call me a hoarder if you wish.

I may be missing your point here, but I think your last sentence contradicts your second sentence.

I know guys who buy guns for their newborn grandkids... and those kids won’t shoot that gun in a year, or likely even in four or five years. Is that hoarding?

Buying and keeping items of value isn’t hoarding IMO. For me, the key element in “Hoarding” is that whatever you are accumulating happens in a panic situation and to the detriment of others.

if I’ve accumulated a few thousand rounds of ammo slowly over time when it’s readily available, and avoid buying what I don’t need when it’s in short supply, I’m not a hoarder, I’m a planner.

but, just an opinion...not meant to be negative.

YMMV

Stay out of crowds is my basic lifestyle choice. People freaking out about having to stay home makes no sense to me.

Anyway, it’s times like this that just reiterate that learning to reload is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I need a better stockpile of components, but I should be able to ride this year out without much trouble.
