Glock 17 is a Gen 4, or would you trade it and use a G19X instead?
Only problem is the 19x doesn't take standard mags, whereas plenty are available for the 17.
I haven't shot the 19x yet, though I've handled it. I'd be 100% satisfied keeping the 17. But I like the 19X cause it's a "deluxe" combat pistol designed for the M17 pistol trials. I dont know about anyone else, but when I hold the 19x, it has a smell that reminds me of aging butter. Don't know if the coating substance is what's giving this smell. (but I like it)

The Glock 19X will take standard Glock 17 mags (as long as the mags don't have a Gen5 floorplate).
If those were the only choices, I'd likely buy both.

I currently already have Glock models: 43, 26gen3, 19gen5, 17gen5, 34gen4, 23gen3, 30SF, and previously owned a lot of other Glocks.

I didn't know that about the mag situation, I just know I heard it won't take 'already standard Glock mags'.
Thanks for clarifying.

I have a Glock 17/4 and son has a Glock 45..they feel and shoot VERY similarly. Glock 45 a wee bit easier to carry(if you want to carry) since the barrel is a little shorter.

Son just mentioned that with his 'trumpbux', he may buy a Glock 17..he has shot mine and his brother's G17/5 and he really likes both of them.

BTW-Glock 19x takes magazines for Glock 17...

I had the same debate with my self. ended up going with the 17 GEN4. The barrel length and price was a factor. I would rather have the longer barrel.

In my opinion, the 19X was made backwards. I think it would have been a better design to put a shorter G19 frame on it, with a G17 slide/barrel setup. This would give the pistol the slightly longer barrel, but still keep the frame relatively compact- 15 round flush fit G19 mags would be standard, and it would still function fine with higher capacity mags that would stick out some. I feel so strongly about this that I shortened a Gen 3 G17 frame in this manner, and it is a great pistol. I was issued the Gen 3 G19 in the military, and the unit I was in still uses them and has no plans of changing that in the foreseeable future.

My thought exactly. I mentioned the backward design to a friend who bought a 19x and he insisted it needed a shorter barrel to make the draw faster and could think of no other benefit.

I think Glock's goal was to make a duty gun like nearly every other gun maker was producing, a 4"(ish) barrel with a full size grip. The concealed carrier was not the target of this gun (though it could be used by them), but rather as a duty gun.

Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! The smell of aging butter??? I don't know that I've ever heard that description before, especially not something I've ever heard about a gun, but I like it!:D
Anyway, I completely understand your having a hard time trying to decide which gun to buy. I'm kind of a Glock newb, and didn't pay much attention to them until a couple of months ago when I bought myself a Glock 44. I liked everything about that gun (still do in fact) and after having it for just a couple of weeks, I decided I was going to get myself a Glock 19 gen 5 for EDC.
That's when the indecision set in. I went looking for a Glock 19 gen 5, and found one in a LGS. The problem was, it was lying right beside a Glock 19X, and it was love at first sight. The looks, the feel, everything about it made me want to buy the 19X instead of the 19 gen 5.
In the end though, I went with practicality and bought the 19 gen 5 - I figured it would be better than the 19X for EDC, and besides - it's almost identical (only heavier) to my Glock 44. But I know myself - one of these days I'll probably dream up a reason for owning a 19X as well. Heck, maybe I'll decide 19Xs smell like "aging butter.":D

I like the balance of the 4" barrel and the shorter sight distance really helps my eyes snap on the front site better than the slightly longer 17. It's minor, but my times reflect it.

The 19x will accept Gen 3 and 4 mags just fine, Gen 5's lip can cause issues, but can be fixed with an inexpensive baseplate swap. Magpul mags may or may not drop free when empty, depending on the mag and/or 19x. Some of mine do, some don't. I find the 19x slightly more comfortable IWB because of the shorter barrel, again minor. I think the 19x finish is superior, and the best finish on any of the Glocks I've owned.

Between the two, I wouldn't trade a Gen 4 17 for a 19X as they are so close enough I wouldn't want to lose money in the trade.

Owning both, my Gen 4 17 is sitting in the shop on consignment and the 19x sits in my safe and won't be sold.

This is correct. Consider everyone else was making a full grip 4ish inch duty gun when the 19X was released. I don't have the list handy anymore but basically all the other manufacturers and new offerings were the same size. HK, Sig, XD, FN, Walther, etc

I know some wanted a 19 grip and 17 slide but that's the opposite of anything I'd consider, as I don't like more than 4" barrel in my pants (CCO excluded, but even there I'd prefer a 4" bull barrel, despite how slim the 1911 is) and OWB the longer barrel gives more issues with cover garments.

To me, the G17 grip frame doesn’t just feel like a longer 19. It feels completely different. The G19 feels to me like a 2x4 whereas the G17 feels comfortable. Like it’s thinner than it actually is.

But, I like the way the G19 swings and points, much like the way I prefer a commander over a government model.

I’d take the G19X/G45 over a G17 all day long. I’m a short guy so the 4” barrel length is also just more comfortable to me.

Location and size of the palm swell, plus the finger grooves are differently spaced on the 19 vs the 26/17.

I agree, the full grip feels much better to me, though the grooveless Gen 2 and 5 do help this somewhat with the 19 in my hands.

Yep, I looked at a Gen 5 19 thing morning and liked it, but I have a G48 and a 19 would be kind of redundant.

Mine, a MOS without the front strap cutout which I hate, is a fantastic shooter and good carry option but still doesn't feel good in my hands.

Shoots well enough, but it's just not a good fit in terms of comfort.

Exactly, the 19X is the solution to a problem that doesn't exist. Just buy a standard G19 then you have the option of using standard 15 round mags, 17 round magazines or even 33 round G18 magazines. They even make magazine sleeves for the 17 round mags if you want them.

I've been tempted to cut down a G17 grip to G19 length. Making one from the factory makes much more sense than the 19X.

Complete agreement here. I went with the G19 over the 17 b/c the shorter grip makes it much more easy to conceal at a cost of only 2 rounds.

Both are good guns. My duty gun is a Gen 4 17 a CD it's been a fantastic pistol. However I will end up replacing it with a Gen 5 eventually because I feel the changes are a worthy upgrade for me. Mostly the trigger and no finger grooves.
