What’s up with the “plum” or purplish tint on some I see? Bluing changed with age/ certain chemicals?

As joneb noted, I have a Russian Makarov from the late 80's. It has turned plum colored in a couple of spots.

The loading gate on my Ruger Blackhawk 357 from the mid 70's has that coloration also.

I think those are my only two with the plum color. I like the look.

It is the result of the temperature of the hot bluing bath being too high. It can also be caused by different metal properties used on various parts of the gun.

That's pretty much what HK said when I asked them about the plum coloring on my P7. They also added that it could also be caused by the bluing solution being of a different consistency or the heat treatment of the metal itself...or it could be a combination of all of the above!

View attachment 904651 My ugly duckling. I still need to finish this project up. 10-6. Super accurate, well balanced, great action. All I have done to it is the red dot and a little bit of cleaning. I did buy a wonderful competition type holster and I still intend to get some additional cylinders to convert it over to 9mm and possibly .380 since my wife shoots .380 and I need more volume in .380 to justify reloading.
you monster!

I like it. :)

S&W 10-5 with image cropping suitable of such a specimen. I would really love to have this barrel taken down to 3" with a round butt conversion but haven't contacted anyone about getting the work done. I can't stand shooting with the factory grips and don't understand how anyone does, but rubber just doesn't look the part.
