I just finished completing an Anderson lower with a standard rifle gas tube. Since I have a couple standard ARs already I was thinking of buying a 22lr upper. Just a couple questions first. I always have gone with PSA uppers and was wondering how are their 22 uppers? What is the magazine compatibility with other 22 ARs? What barrel length would everyone suggest? I’ve liked all my PSA uppers so far mostly cheaper mloks. Very satisfied so I’m assuming they are a pretty safe bet. Thanks

I did pretty much what your talking about a year or so ago. I got a PSA dedicated 22lr upper. I used it as a swap out and then built up a lower and made it a dedicated 22 cal rifle. I got mags for it from CDNN ( https://www.cdnnsports.com/cmmg-ceiner-kel-sig522-22.html?___SID=U#.XokMAupKg2w ). I put a Magpul rear sight on it and sighted it in and went from there. Here is a link to when I asked about them on another sight ( https://www.falfiles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=419366 ) you have to wade through some chaff but there is some good info. I don't know why but the pics I post with it are gone.

Hope that helps ya

I'm a bit confused. You built a lower; But lowers don't have a gas tube, nor does a 22LR upper require it (they're blowback).

Regardless, do yourself a favor. Buy these mags or something similar with steel feed lips rather than the ones linked above. I had two different brands of the polymer ones and found both "leaking" 22LR's after storage loaded...spilled out all over the shelf they were on. The polymer feed lips broke under constant pressure over a year. S&W M&P 15-22 mags seem to be okay with polymer lips, but not the generic ones that fit Sigs, cmmg, etc.

Sorry I meant buffer tube. It’s an Anderson lower with M&P kit components and a Trinity force buffer tube assembly. So far I’m close to 100 bucks in it.

Would it be about the same thing to get a 556 barrel then buy a 22 conversion bolt for it that way I have both options. Is there a difference between the 22 upper and one with a conversion bolt?

The dedicated 22 upper will be more accurate since it will have the correct twist rate of 1-16 versus the 1-9, 1-8, or 1-7 twist rate of the 5.56 barrel.

As far as the PSA dedicated 22 uppers - Their pistol uppers have had issues with not being very accurate while their rifle length uppers have been good to go.

Black Dog Machine magazines are pretty much the goto magazines. Some like using the S&W MP 15-22 magazines but they require an adapter to properly fit into a standard AR lower.

How much would the accuracy suffer by shooting 22 through a 5.56 10” long barrel or out of other pistol length ARs?

I couldn't tell you out of a pistol length barrel. I do know that when we had to use the 22 chamber adapters that accuracy was bad in both the M16A1 and M16A2 rifles.
