Good evening. I’ve been a member here for many years, but have been far less active in the past few years just due to the busyness of life and being in the first few years of a new career in healthcare (don’t get me started on current events).

Obviously this isn’t the most ideal time to ask this question with everything going on, but for when things get back to normal...

Anybody have any recommendation for a thorough training organization in Texas? My wife and I want to take some firearms courses, possibly together, but would also really like to get a formal training on current, relevant self defense and home defense law for this state. We’ve only lived in Texas a bit over a year.

A few weeks ago we had a concerning incident with our dog waking and growling at our window facing the backyard around 2am. She’s never - in several years - done anything like that. It was fairly concerning, as we also have two young kids at home. In retrospect, my response was unwise and ultimately, thankfully, nothing came of it.

We live in a nice neighborhood in a desirable medium-sized town just outside San Antonio, but the situation lead me to realize that despite a thorough understanding of self defense laws in states we used to live in (AZ, WA), I really don’t KNOW the finer details of legality in Texas. Obviously I can take a closer look at the law (I have skimmed it since moving here) but I’d feel much more comfortable taking a class through a respected and reputable organization, if possible. I do have a bit of a background in LE and have taken college courses on criminal and use of force law in the past, so I’d appreciate as thorough a class on Texas-specific use of force justification as possible.

I know that’s a very long-winded way to say, “yo, any good law/training classes pertinent to Texas?” Thanks for bearing with me.

This is an area that I know very, very well. I can strongly recommend the following:

1. For a comprehensive set of courses from pure beginner to very advanced - Karl Rehn's outfit at https://krtraining.com/
Karl is a nationally known trainer, and respected by the industry. I've known him and trained with him for many years. He trains trainers, has done recognized research into handgun usage and ergonomics. He is highly and technically educated which is plus in the gun world. Plus, all his folks are real people. No commando, BS, blood lust cliches. Karl brings in many quality guest trainers as you progress (if you want to).

Also, check out their faq for local ranges and matches.

2. Sensible Self Defense:

Eric L. Lamberson

Eric is highly qualified and works with excellent guest trainers. I've shot with him and taken part in his excellent, realistic matches. He brings in Mas Ayoob and others as guest lectures. The beginning legal and shooting course from Ayoob is a must do for the serious shooter.

3. Tim Reedy
https://tdrtraining.com/

Another excellent trainer from beginner to advanced and brings in quality experts. He runs a great IDPA match at the Bandera Gun Club

Now - what is up in running due to the virus is unknown.

How to find a quality trainer? That's a question for the ages. There are local ranges that offer beginner and advanced courses. You must check out credentials as, with no offense to local outfits I'm not familiar with, you see trainers who only quote being in the military or law enforcement. That does NOT mean they understand civilian usage in realistic everyday problems and the intricacies of the law. Do the trainers indicate that they have taken course on how to be a firearms trainer from recognized sources like Tim Givens (www.rangemaster.com), NRA or Massad Ayoob (who will be at Eric's - but who knows with the virus).

Here's a brief summary of what to look for. https://bearingarms.com/bob-o/2016/12/20/run-like-hell-firearms-training-class/
You can google other descriptions of what to look for.

4. Tom Givens - www.rangemaster.com - He comes to the local area - see Karl and Tim. The top of the line

5. Massad Ayoob - https://massadayoobgroup.com/ Similar

If a local outfit does not provide credentials indicating training on how to be a trainer, I'd be suspicious. No offense to the local ranges but sometimes their instructor descriptions are somewhat vague. Been in the military, police.

Disclosure - I know all these folks and consider them friends and vice versa - however, that occurred through my exposure and training with them.

There are other good folks in the Dallas and Houston area but I don't know them as well. Others might.

Welcome to Texas.

Texas is reasonably friendly to self defense. Good starts to understanding:

a concealed carry class - they go over the basics, and teach the “rules” around Texas’ law. - https://www.dps.texas.gov/rsd/ltc/index.htm
Andrew Branca - https://lawofselfdefense.com/

In general, at home, at night....the law is more friendly to the home owner.

As always, the best result is not having to enter into self defense.....

He runs a great IDPA match at the Bandera Gun Club.
Crazy. Bandera Gun Club is actually where I do all my shooting as of the last six months or so since finding them. I’ve heard of the IDPA matches they run there, but hadn’t yet gotten involved. Will definitely check it out.

Thank you both for the great responses!

If you are already using the Bandera Gun Club you would be crazy to not get in touch with Tim Reedy. Tim is an excellent teacher and a first rate human. I have known him for several years and he will set you on the right path.

That's the absolute truth. Now Tim might get you KILT on da street. This is a terrible pun if you know Tim and his choice of garments.

He is a great guy. If Tom comes to the area again, sign up. Karl and Tom have him out.

It is tragic that Tom's Tac-Con in Dallas had to be cancelled. That's an awesome event. If I still lived in TX, I would have been there!

Family keeps me close to home, nowadays.
