Powder quiz!

I quite using Unique and went to Universal. Mainly because Unique doesn't meter well in my Dillon 650. I'm totally sold on Universal for mid range loads. The data is almost identical and it burns much cleaner. I have found that Unique and Bullseye both will burn cleaner with magnum primers. I'm really surprised at how dirty your gun got after just 100 rounds using a coated lead bullet. None of my guns get near that dirty after a couple hundred rounds with coated lead. Yours looks like my 8 3/8" Model 14 after shooting an afternoon with Bullseye and Lead HBWC. Its the only gun that I shoot with non coated lead any more. It will still shoot that load in one ragged hole at 25 yards when I can do my part which is becoming harder and harder to do with my old eyes. When the last thousand I have loaded are gone, I'll probably be done with uncoated lead forever.
I've tried Universal, as I'm always looking for that one powder I can use in all my chamberings, but had too much variation on the chronograph to stick with it. I was still new to reloading at the time, so it could have been me. I still have some around, so I'll give it another try!

Light loads, positions sensitive powders, not enough pressure. Bullseye?

My hands don’t get that dirty and I shoot black powder percussion revolvers. Cylinder gap within specs on that little monster.

One of my favourite and most accurate light 44mag loads is 5 grains of Bullseye with a 240 bullet. After a 100 or so rounds my SBH and hand looks like the OP picture. Cleanup is really easy though.
So Bullseye is my guess.

Unique. And for extra credit you were using cast bullets with conventional wax/grease based lubes and your pressure was in the 20000 or less PSI range. Janet has no apples in her basket as train travel to Bern requires proper papers at this time and Janet being a Barrister is classified as Unabteilung and shall not be issued transit stemplung.

My guess too! And extra points for calling the lube. Maybe the old green RCBS stuff or the old black Ideal!

Yesterday with MBC 158 LSWC over 5.5 unique, 1.610. CDBF123D-2960-4D44-AA0C-C066F406974F.jpeg But accuracy very good 0DB74B3E-0AFC-4005-B64D-6A6DD47467AB.jpeg 20 yds, offhand, and yeah one flyer I pulled! Drats! I always do that, like pulling an inside straight!

Since I get similarly filthy results from Unique with semi-autos, I didn't even think about checking the gap. Got out the gauge set to satisfy my, and your, curiosity, and it's .006. Some of my S&W are .004, and I did have a Performance Center 625 that was .010 (!?), so I guess that's not way out of line.

This is why I always end up going back to HP-38.
Yeah, HP-38 would probably be a better all-around choice for everything I load. But I did a stupid thing. A few years ago, when there was an inexplicable shortage of powder, I found an excellent online deal on Unique. I knew I could use it for everything I load. So now I have 16 pounds of the stuff. I guess it might be down to 15 now, but that's still a lot to use up, and I really don't want to use it as fertilizer after searching so long for it and getting such a nice deal on it. ;-)

Not overly I suppose, but I’m no Smith. I use Unique in 38 special and 44 Magnum also with Alox lube stick and tumble. Dirty hands are part of the game, gun shot residue. :) I carry wet cloths in a zip lock baggie cause the black powder makes such a mess.

Add: If I lived with in a few miles of you I’d offer to buy a few pounds of the 16 pounds. Run it thru the forum market might get a sale of two.

Sell one of the 8pounders. Now. Make a small profit, because you got such a sweet deal (everyone knows, the profit is made on the buy, not the sell).

Buy something you want when the powders come back.

Even if you don't sell one of the 8 pounders, whats $25 for a lb of powder to try? Might be a great investment if you get cleaner and more accurate loads. After 40+ years of reloading, 95% of my shooting is with 4 powders, Bullseye for wadcutters, Universal for mid range loads and either H110 or 2400 for Hunting depending on the gun and load. BUT I do keep about 10 other brands of powder on hand to experiment with different bullet/powder combinations. How boring would reloading be if you only used one bullet and one powder! Everytime I get a new gun that I know I'll keep for a while, I try different powder/bullet combinations until I wring the last bit of accuracy out of it. Most of the time, I can find a load with one of my go to powders that will be as good as it gets, but every now and then, I have to use something different. I have a 7" S&W Model 686 that will shoot hot hunting loads as good as any revolver I've ever owned, but it will only do so with 4227 Powder. I've tried dozens of combinations with H110/2400 and you would be lucky to shoot an 6-8" group at 75 yards. Load up some 4227 and it will shoot 2-3" groups at 75 yards if I do my part which is sadly getting harder to do even with a Red Dot. Experimenting is what reloading is all about at least for me. Do I save money, probably, but it gives me the opportunity to shoot much better ammo than whats available off the shelf.

Have you numbered the chambers with a sharpie to see if the same chamber always throws the flyer?
Nope, I have thought about it in the past but I figured it was just me and my aging old eyes! Haha! And especially if I’m shooting offhand and not from a rest.
Maybe I need to get back to a rest and try that!
Thanks

I wish I was closer, I’d offer to buy some or all of it from you.
Flaming dirt or not, it is my go to powder for 9mm, 38/357, 44 mag, 45acp, 30-30, and a few others! But then all I shoot are naked boolits!:what: Oh my!!!!

I like Unique, but as has been noted it's pretty smoky in the light loads. I'm moving over to Trail Boss for those.

I've noticed that lubed lead bullets and unique work together to create a unique kind of soot that shows up everywhere. Jacketed and plated bullets not nearly as much.
