I live in and area that is normal to hear gunshots outdoors, I myself have my own range to shoot. But since Covid19 scares I have been hearing gunshots from areas where I never heard them before. I guess that is from new gun owners out learning how to shoot since our local indoor gun ranges are closed because of CV19.

Also my wife was out grocery shopping and was talking to a person in line (6 feet away of course) and that person said they just found a deer carcass stripped of meat, the thing was they understood why they are poaching now since meat supplies are reduced in stores and people have reduced incomes but the person was more upset that the poacher left the carcass and didn't clean up the mess.

Anyone notice more gunfire and poaching in your area now?

I live on the very edge of the suburbs. In fact I live in a “subdivision” on the far end of the development and my road is the last one that I would call suburbs, and realistically I don’t consider my end of the road to be suburbs. All that said, it’s country living behind me but I have a bunch of neighbors to the east. I have recently been hearing a whole lot of gunfire to the east. I think it’s the same clowns who shoot off fireworks constantly at 9pm after we get the kids to bed at 8:30, but whoever it is shoots about every other day and they usually shoot 2 mags through whatever it is and they are done. Sounds like a pistol sometimes and I am assuming an AR part of the time because you can count the 30 rds about a second apart from each other and then about a 10 second pause to swap mags.

I live right in-between 2 outdoor ranges, and I have 2 neighbors that shoot as well as myself, so I'd never know if I hear more gunshots or not.

That being said, at least at the grocery stores I go to their meat department as stayed pretty well stocked aside from the run that very first weekend.

Edit: I also have run into a few guys in the area that regularly "hunt" deer through the year. They all use bows or crossbows.

Haven't really noticed a difference, but I'm in town and don't hear gunshots often.

Unless things are that much crazier elsewhere, I don't think meat is rare enough right now to justify poaching. Selection of meat might be worse but the shelves aren't absolutely stripped. Ground beef at a reasonable price has been my hardest thing to find, but I've found it here and there. And, if you can buy a box of hunting ammo in a deer caliber, you can afford to buy some meat off the shelf. Just my opinion.

Also, here in Illinois we have major problems with Blue Tongue and Chronic Wasting Disease. I personally wouldn't trust any deer meat without having it tested, and I don't think most poachers are having their deer tested.

Lots of target shooting but slacked some due to constant rain here and much mud. Poaching not noticed.

Comes down to more folks having more time off, looking for something to do. As for poaching to feed the family, I don't see times bad enough to justify that.....yet. Too many free lunch/free food distributions going on right now. Iffin you're hungry and your family is hungry, there are easier and better ways to feed them at the moment than poaching. Why risk a fine of several thousand dollars and maybe your future hunting and fishing privileges, for a few pounds of venison you don't really need. Nope, if it's poaching going on, it's just some dirt-ball shooting a deer outta opportunity and not need. He may try to justify it differently, but he's just kidding himself. Finding a deer carcass stripped of meat could mean a lot of things. It also mean predators feeding off a car-kill or a winter kill. It could mean a human salvaging meat from a car-kill. I always take what I hear from ladies standing in line at the grocery store with a grain of salt.

There’s more gunfire about a hundred feet from my house. That’s because I’ve got about 12k of .22’s, my own range, and lots of time. Plus nice weather

I’m really surprised I don’t hear more
With that kind of regularity It’s a small miracle that you can still hear at all... that might explain why you can’t hit more... wear protection.

Maybe a little more shooting than normal, but that could also be due to the weather finally warming up.

Don't know about the poaching thing, there's still plenty of cows around and the local lockers are still operating. Probably 95% of the deer poaching that happens around here is due to guys getting trophies the easy way, nothing to do with meat.

You're right that people have more time to shoot now, I've been retired for 12 years so my shooting time is still the same, I've just been getting the itch to shoot since I hear it outside more than I used too.

I'm sure the guy that found the carcass knew what he saw, it sounded like he was an experienced hunter. It could have been a rare find but I know there are some people that live paycheck to paycheck and with unemployment checks and a government boost check weeks away for many, some people may be getting desperate already. I have heard a single shot north of me late in the day. Time will tell, hopefully it doesn't get that bad.

Poaching? Haven't any clue. Turkey season is open here and people are taking full advantage of the covid situation as outdoor activities including fishing and hunting were exempted from the state wide stay at home order. Gun shots over the weekend were definitely more than usual which I'm sure is because the ranges around here are closed and there are a few backyard shooters nearby. Don't mind the guys with big hill backstops. I do mind people on flat land thinking a pile of pallets is a backstop shooting towards a road or my horse pasture. Local PD had some words with them.

Only one range is open in the entire Memphis area. No idea about poaching.

If you find a very familiar, safe area to shoot, with a very High riverbank which is higher than the outdoor berms at the private club MSSA (near us), it should be safe.
This spot is >>Regularly>> used, for many years, by guys who plink.

*Guys sometimes need to escape the women and/or young children at home.
Is this not easy to understand, even for those of us who are no longer semi-nomadic "hunter-gatherers"?

I heard a lot of rifle fire at about 10:30 last Friday night and I live just outside city limits of 120k people. Im thinking drunks that were bored.

I hear people shooting on weekend afternoons pretty frequently regardless.

Neighbor had a pistol stolen out of his truck on Friday night however.

Where I live there is distinctly less gunfire than usual. I attribute this to people preserving their ammo, but have not gone door to door surveying :)

I was talking to a gun store owner last week. Business has been great. First, there were people stocking up on ammunition. Then, people were coming in to buy guns - first time buyers. Then, as schools closed and work slowed down, they came in to buy ammunition to shoot on their "time off."

Naw, no more gunfire around here than usual - probably a little less because the weather has been lousy. A couple of buddies and I were planning on going fishing at Twin Lakes (about 25 miles south of here) last Thursday morning. We were planning on taking separate vehicles and doing the "social distancing" thing, but we were going regardless. That is until we got up that morning - it was snowing and blowing like a SE Idaho January morning - not like a morning in late March.o_O
I think there was some poaching going on over by the Portneuf River last fall. At least I think someone(s) was shooting ducks and/or geese before legal shooting hours. Every Saturday morning for 3 week in a row, my wife and I woke up well before daybreak to the "POP! POP! POP!" sounds of a shotgun, or shotguns going off. We dropped by the Fish&Game Office in Pocatello one day and told them about it. It stopped after that.;)

No gunfire, then again I live in suburbia.

I have noticed an uptick in people carrying. Curiously gun shaped bulges or open carry. Looked like people that didn’t carry much before, but (probably) had the CHL.

In one case I saw a shotgun prominently displayed (butt resting on the front seat, dome light on) in the front seat of a pickup with someone stationed in an open doorway watching everything while two sets of families dumped their groceries in the beds in the Walmart parking lot at last call at 8:30. Looked like two sets of an extended family going shopping together and worried about being robbed.

Like others, I hear more gun shots now than before. But I'm off work and so are many others. The grass is needing mowed, and the buzzards have been back for a few weeks now. :)

way less. what I do hear, sounds more like someone giving a firearm a good function test, and then calling it a wrap as opposed to the casual target shooting that starts and stops and can go on for an hour, seems like 15 minutes from a particular direction and they are done for the day - possibly they are rationing themselves? also, think I've heard a few full autos in the mountains over the last few weeks, which normally you don't hear.
