The following post contains load data that was carefully worked up in my revolver. They are near, but under published max
I drove out to the desert and shot a lot of 44 Mag rounds out of my Redhawk 5.5" barrel.
I've been trying to see which powder I liked best out of H110, 300MP and 2400.
I loaded a bunch of rounds of each powder working up to very near MAX . In all cases I used the Zero 240gr JSP.
I got good accuracy with all the powders, with the most accurate for each powder as follows:
H110 - 23.9 grains, 1303 FPS average for 5 shots
300MP - 24.6 grains, 1294 FPS average for 5 shots
2400 - 20.8 grains, 1305 FPS average for 5 shots
Recoil on all these was tolerable for me, but somewhat unpleasant. My conclusion is that I'll use 2400 when the other powders run out. Strictly for reasons of economy.
This kind of info from other users is what like to read most on this forum, so I wanted to pass this on.
Here is something unusual I'd like your opinions on:
with the 2400, I went up to 21.0 grains. These were a little sticky on extraction and I won't go there again, but the weird thing was the velocity, about 1280 FPS which is 25 FPS lower than I got with 20.8 grains.
I'm very certain I didn't mess up the powder charges, I'm VERY meticulous about that.

Is there anything that would case this besides errors on the chrono?
Do the other velocities I reported above sound about right?
