What's the oddest thing you've heard someone say in regards to firearms, ammunition, etc.?

I know of 3 or 4 woman, 1 of them my sister who thought that the ammunition, case and projectile together was what came out of the barrel. Kind of funny when you think about it.

Also saw a newer shooter use both index fingers to squeeze the trigger despite being instructed otherwise, just couldnt keep that second finger out of there. Said it was better because it made it easier to pull the trigger

I remember my favorite: "Its a MAGAZINE! M1 Guuhrayens (Garand)'s take 'clips'".... For the nitpickers, English is a language, not a long line of cliche, and phrasing. You can say any word you want, and if its sends the right message, its a proper statement, even if the culture considers it distasteful. So people can call it "clip" because it meets that definition. But for those who insist you can only say 'magazine', it amazes me the quickness in which they tell you your speaking wrongly, and rarely missing an opportunity to mispronounce an actual noun.
So, you won't mind if a 30-30 is called an assualt weapon and shoulder things that go up a barrel shroud?

I had a guy recently repeat to me the same tired "a 50 Cal (note if someone calls the BMG "the 50 cal" and they're not speaking from experience, i usually just stop listening there) can kill a ...blah blah blah... without even hitting it 'cause of the shockwave". While I would not call this guy well informed, he was constantly using his phone to fact check, so a little taken back. When I told him this was straight made up, he tried to convince me he's right by explaining he heard it from a guy who saw it. I told him the laws of physics still apply, and he just stood there trying to figure out was stupid, him or me. I never heard back, and I know the guy could never resist the urge to go look it up.
At least he's willing to fact check things. Ignorance is ok as long as it's not will full.
Dumbest one I heard was. "I use fmj for hunting because they are tried and true."
I tried explaining to him. But he was hung up on the fact the military uses it so it has to be the best for killing.

Coworker: The 5.56 bullet tumbles through the air on the way to the target.
Me: No it doesn't. If it did, it would be totally inaccurate. It only tumbles on impact, not during flight.
Coworker: No, it tumbles in flight, that's what the barrel rifling is for.
Me: No, barrel rifling twists the bullet to make it spiral like a football.
Coworker: No, it tumbles in the air. I was in the Army during Vietnam and that is what we were trained.
Me: o_O :uhoh:
My dad said when he was in the army they tried telling him Hash was camel dung laced with opium. He was in basic training when we left Vietnam.

if its used in an assault, then it is an assault weapon. No differnent from a hammer or sock full of soap. Words have meaning, we shouldn't be offended when people use them correctly. The 'barrel shroud', 'shoulder thing that goes up' backs my point. Using nonsense words, especially in a written law is an abuse of language and citizens. But you didn't hear thousands of angry microculture gunnuts screaming "its a sling, M suxties (M60) have shoulder things that go up"

I have seen a couple of ladies do that to get through the tough first shot on a DA/SA automatic. They just stayed with it for succeeding shots. I have heard reliably of women considerately furnished by Dad or spouse with nice simple double action revolvers doing the same. Which is better than the two women I know who figured out that it was a lot easier to shoot that revolver if they pulled the hammer all the way back first. Both had ADs, fortunately without injury or much damage.

I hunt with electronic muffs - protects what's left of my hearing and I can amplify sounds to hear even better
I've hunted with Peltor 6 electronic muffs for almost 30 years now. At first I fiddled with turning the sound up and you can hear better. However, I found if you turn the sound up, it makes it difficult to judge direction and distance so now the first thing I do is adjust the volume to ambient. Then I can tell where the sound is coming from and how far away it is.

"I cant shoot FMJ in my SKS".

I was at Walmart and some guy was buying all the 30-06, 22lr, 12ga they had. He said give me some of those 7.62 rounds and says these are FMJ I cant shoot these in my SKS and handed them back to the clerk. I stood there and wanted to ask why or even tell him it was fine but I just walked away shaking my head because a dummy like that shouldn't even own firearms.

I did that with a Nagant revolver when I was 10 or 11.
My Dad got me a set of those hand grip exercisers. It's the best thing to recommend if someone is struggling and wants to fix it.

I would like to compare these "cop killer bullets" to my barns 300gr FMJ 44mag loads.
Many years ago an ammo maker put out some .44 ammo that was supposed to be the heaviest bullet commercially loaded for a .44 Magnum. It was also supposed to be a pretty hot mover, comparable to muzzle velocities of much lighter bullets.
Someone who shall remain nameless bought a box of them and went to a small local range to try them out. After firing only a few rounds that person noticed little dots of daylight now visible through the backstop. That person packed up their gear and went home, whistling innocently on the way out.

The weirdest one was a debate on FB I had, where a guy said that 7.62x39 was the preferred designated marksman caliber. I know debates online are pointless, but that one bothered me a bit too much. So I told him, "do you mean 7.62x51, the NATO round?" He told me "no, the 7.62x39, because AKs are the best DMRs."
Again, I said "do you mean like a dragonov or PSL eon 7.62X54r?"
He said, "No, the AK 47, and caliber 7.62x39 is the best sniper round"
Me, "OK..., no. I don't subscribe to the "AKs are inherently inaccurate" camp. But if you a want to shoot something past 300 yards, accurately, like a "sniper" then absolutely 7.62x39 the wrong choice. No legitimate sniper or designated marksman in the world, would use 7.62x39 or an AK..."

It went on a lot longer, and I had to pull out the ballistic calculator.

That's when I still cared about things...

Got any details of these rounds?
Such as a weight and velocity even if it's it's just on the box BS.

You're asking me to remember the details of one box of ammo purchased like 25 years ago. Bullet weight wasn't much over 300 grains I don't think and it was rated at more than 1400 fps. Rather not even like what .44 Magnum +p is rated at.
Not sure what their backstop was rated for back in the 90's.
