No “ban” exists o_O….even on imported Russian ammo.
The State Dept. — ::::suggested:::: a future ban — that new applications to import “will be subject to…denial”. “Subject to” might mean “denial”.

And we don't know When the first/next Import application is Due for review….Do We ?

Be clear about an Assumed series of clear denials, versus an actual ban (has not happened).

:::::::
Lots of Cases of Russian 7.62x39 are available, Online, for about $440.

As I understand it the importer has to apply for a permit for each shipment that they want to import and as of Sept 7th this year all new permit application to import ammo manufactured in russia will be denied. However permits that have already been granted or ones that were submitted prior to the 7th will still be approved, and the permits are valid for 2 years. Presumably every US based ammo importer went and applied for as many permits as they could possibly get shipments for, so we should still have it coming into the country for the next 23 months. After that it will not be allowed to enter the country after all the current 24 month permits expire unless the sanction is lifted, which I think is exceedingly unlikely. People will be buying it up as fast as they can get it between now and then so I expect their will be a consumer driven shortage and subsequent higher prices as the deadline to get it in the country nears.

PSA has announced as of 2023 they will be producing large amounts of steel cased 7.62x39

I'd be willing to be if that is a success 5.45x39 will follow as will other ammunition

Do you have a link to that? I am wondering if they are just buying the cases from russia like hornady does or if its imported from some place and rebranded.

On a tangent, one thing I have always wanted is to be able to buy empty primed steel cases. I love reloading but brass prep is a chore. It would be really nice to be able to make disposable handloads. There was a place a few years ago I found that was selling primed 7.62x39 steel cases for $120 per 1000. I wish I would have bought a few thousand.

The point of the ban is that they will not approve any future import license requests for ammo coming out of Russia. The current licenses are still good and can be used to import as usual. There is a very popular gun store in NH that I talked to the owner about the ban as he had 5 pallets of Tula on the floor at a reasonable price. I was wondering when the price would start to reflect the ban. He told me he had a 5 year import license for Tula ammo, so he said he's not to worried about the ban as he suspected many shops like him had similar license setups.

Even if the ban comes into fruition, that gives other manufacturers several years or more to start ramping up if the demand in the US warrants it.

I am guessing he was referring to his type 08 importer license, which is good for 3 years. A form 6 application to import is only valid for 2 years and you have to specify the quantity and type you will be importing on each form 6, so unless he went ahead and filed a bunch of form 6's ahead of the cutoff date he is already SOL. If he did file them then he should have 2 years from the date of approval.

Interesting as he told me 5 years. Even if it's 2 as you say then it's still a pretty good amount of time not to have to worry about it.

This is all true, yet, the only real concern is people freaking out and despite ample supply, the prices may continue to stay elevated and even increase. This could be fueled by the masses thinking it will be there last chance to get 7.62x39mm. A self fulfilling prophecy as it were.

JCooperfan1911:

Many people might have the choices of 7.62x39 Confused with the near-impossible “choices” of the now-scarce, True, Russian round 5.45x39?

And Lots of folks seem unaware that many bulk 7.62x39 ammo sellers are found today….online……their mental horizons seem to stop at their local Cabelas, Academy etc.

My two favorite rifles/carbines are chambered in 7.62x39. I'm not worried in the least. There's enough x39 in the country to easily supply our needs for decades... long after this administration is gone. I have a 189 Series Ruger Mini-30 and a recent production CZ 527 in x39. By choosing firearms chambered in that caliber I chose wisely for the foreseeable future and beyond.

I still have nearly 1000 rounds of Norinco x39 and was still buying it long after the ban on Chinese ammo. I have several thousand rounds of Russian made, and at this writing can still buy it. Biden's order will only effect us in the near term if people panic and go into hoarding behavior. Unfortunately panicking is part of human nature.

The fact is there is no need to panic buy. If everyone could keep a stiff upper lip prices would be a lot lower than they are and there would be plenty of x39 to go around. “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”

I just bought a case of reloadable Norma 7.62x39 - brass cased, boxer primed and non-magnetic. Will probably reserve for my Banshee. I doubt demand for AKs and their ammo will die out for decades at least. Cheap ammo isn’t the only reason folks like them.

Someone needs to makes AK soft points like the Speer 64g .223 where the lead does not protrude so much. I’d be all over that in a heavier bullet.

There’s lots of sources of 7.62x39 steel & brass case ammo besides Russia. MANY countries use this caliber in their military.
Wolf and Red Army are importers who get ammo from multiple countries.
We may never see 25 cent ammo again but 7,62x39 is still gonna be one of the cheaper calibers to shoot.

People hording and panic buying ammo???? Nahhhhh.....

Ha :D yeah, the only trouble with people like me who can keep a cool head is that there aren't enough of us. And so panic, and predictions of gloom and doom are the order of the day. My last purchase of Russian 7.62x39 worked out to 23 cents a round, including shipping costs. I can wait for normalcy to return.

True enough. I've got stashes of x39, from all over the world, including domestic like Federal and Winchester of course, but also from Israel, Serbia, Korea, Ukraine, and etc. I'm not worried. We've been through ammo shortages and price gouging before, and we survived it just like we will this current crisis.

They do or at least did it was the Federal Fusion line of 7.62x39 had a 123gr bonded soft point. I believe that offering has been discontinued. The bullet is still available as a component as a Speer Gold Dot.

There is also a 150gr Speer Gold Dot made for the 300blk that would be a good choice if you wanted a heavier option, it would be only available by reloading though.

I just wish I could get more of them. I should have bought a bunch of them last year when they were still available

Luckily I have 4 or 5 boxes of Federal Fusions and I laid heavy into the Speer Gold Dot bullet when I got them for under $12 per box. I'll have enough to last mine and someone after me lifetimes.

I really wanted to try some of the gold dots, seems speer discontinues the things guys like lol. I've got some speer 130fn loaded up, think they will be good on deer. I've got some speer 150 round nose is like to try.

Seen a place online had the 154 gr steel case in stock, think it was $10a box of 20 I'd like to get some to try.

I don't think Speer has discontinued the Gold Dot bullet as a component. I do think Federal has quit loading the Fusion bullet though.

Those Speer 130 FN are the bees knees in my 300 Hamr I tried them in my x39 and they didn't shoot well. If you get them to shoot you'll be happy with their performance.
