454 is a Roll Crimp.. I might just get a complete set of .45LC die. and stop being so cheap… New Years ResolutionNever tried - the 45Colt usually requires a roll crimp where as the ACP is a taper.
If your 454 does a roll crimp use it if you can- I do believe I have a 454 crimp that is taper.....I would need to double check. The 45 Colt maybe too short for the 454 and 460 dies - I have never tried it.

I keep a good selection of spacer! great for timing mussel brakesI’ve used crimp dies meant for a long cartridge on a short cartridge but I had to use a spacer in the middle of the die. It ran out of adjustment otherwise. In my case I was using 45ACP dies for 45GAP. All other dies worked with enough adjustment.

your right! I’ll just get a proper set… RCBS or Lee ???? hummmmm love both.
I’m cheap as well but it might be worth buying another set of dies before they triple in price. You might even be able to sell stuff at a big profit the way used cars and campers have been a good investment to flip in the last year or so. (Of course this is actually sad and pathetic but it’s what we’re dealing with so might as well try to make the best of it.)
Hornady makes a good set of dies too!View attachment 1052259
My Hornady 454 die set does have a TC die. I have never used it - I have a Redding Profile Crimp die for the 454.
Not sure why the set would have a TC die......
back to thinking Cheap out loud.I have a RCBS set for 45 Colt. I have also struggled with too many split cases in 45 Colt.
I have purchased a Lee sizing die which I will try - see this thread I started a short while back. Specifically post #20 : https://www.thehighroad.org/index.php?threads/recommend-a-good-steel-45-colt-sizing-die.898659/
The Lee die - in my very un-scientific test seemed to size the cases a bit less than the RCBS and Hornady. I am tossing my current batch of 45 Colt brass and will start with a fresh batch and use the Lee sizer, RCBS flare and seat dies and the Redding Profile Crimp I mentioned above - it does 45 Colt and 454 Casull.
Can you use a .45ACP Lee Factory Crimp Die in a .45 Long Colt?
I’ve never tried Redding dies, they sound too expensive for my die needs. I might just get the Lee 3 set now for $32 and the FCD later for $15-$20. That way my wife will never noticeIf you're loading cast or coated cast........don't do it. Lol, you'll resize the bullet. Jacketed, yeah, you can get a 45 acp FCD to adjust enough I "think", but Lee does make a 45 Colt specific FCD. Also, look at the Redding 45 Colt profile crimp die, it works well with this caliber, and does not resize the bullet.
If you can find the bits, I suggest buying a la cart: Lee sizing/decapping die and FCD with Hornady M-die for expanding and an RCBS seating-crimping die. There’s no law says you have to buy sets. Use the best of the bunch and don’t pay for stuff you won’t use.Hornady makes a good set of dies too!
I've been told if you share your tobacco with them they like you. I don't dip. So I give mine butterscotch candy. Here’s the Plan! I’m buying a Lee cuz it’s cheap!
But I do LOVE hornady pistols seating die for high volume loading. 45 LC I’m planning cowgirl loads with 1873’s and spitting tobacco. horse don’t like me cuz I eat their dewormers So probably get a SXS.
So Cheap Lee, here I come!
Oh no. No, no, no! NOT another lockring debate. Please?I've been told if you share your tobacco with them they like you. I don't dip. So I give mine butterscotch candy.
I like the Lee dies. I just buy lock rings for them.
There's nothing to debate. I run a single stage and like to lock the base adjustment down. Did it the other way for years.Oh no. No, no, no! NOT another lockring debate. Please?
