Today I enjoyed the outdoors. I chose to carry......

I went fishing with my Dad yesterday at a State Park not too far away.
IMG_20220712_101859365.jpg

We had lots of strikes, got some up to the boat, and my dad landed a Rainbow trout that he released. Not that big.... Came home empty handed except for some stories.

Last week we both bagged our limits and let a bunch of fish go. I reminded my dad that's why it's called fishing.

Here's some of the load out. Turns out trout love crappie jigs.

We’ve had some fun picture threads lately that have remained mercifully free of bickering or controversy. Let’s keep the good vibes rolling.

I’m hoping this will become a long running thread capturing pictures of some of our favorite outdoor load outs.

Every post must include a mention and/or picture of the gun you carried in the great outdoors that particular outing. This isn’t a general non-firearm gear thread as that’s outside the scope of THR. But if other gear is in the pictures, no problem. BUT THERE HAS TO BE A GUN, or we’ll get shut down. Also, let’s not debate or disparage anyone’s choices. This isn’t the thread to debate the effectiveness of bear spray.

Tell us what you carried, your ammo choice if you like, and maybe the purpose of the outing and load out choice.

I was off work today and had some time to go out for a nice hike. I took my time and enjoyed it. I saw some deer a smooth green snake, a marmot, and all kinds of birds. Weather was great.

Mountain lions are the biggest predator here so I carried a Sig Sauer P220 chambered in 10mm auto. It was loaded with Underwood Ammo 140 gr Extreme Penetrators. The bullets are made by Lehigh but the cartridges are loaded by Underwood.

Normally I am trucking along but I was under a doctor’s orders to keep my heart rate low. So I had time for a few pictures in the woods.

I also carried a WE Knife Co. Chimera knife. It’s a 3.9” S35VN bladed flipper knife. Very handy and very comfortable to use.

And finally I also was using a 48” Rowan Tree walking stick. Rowan is also known as mountain ash. It was made by a man in Ireland and makes for a nice hiking stick.

All in all it was a very peaceful time. I saw no one and just listened to some relaxing music on a single ear bud. Couldn’t have been much better.

So what did you carry into the outdoors today?
Series 70 Colt .45, loaded with Buffalo Bore 255 gr hardcast, confident it will stop a black bear or mountain lion, maybe a grizzly with proper shot placement. My wife and I like to walk trails in bear country, can’t believe a lot of people walk these trails with no defense at all, especially young people! DF33DD9A-BA71-4387-9C12-AFB2B29AA0C7.jpeg

Most of today's young people have no real idea of the dangers that lurk nearby. Most have never been in the wild and even those that are, have no idea. If it does not pop-up on the phone screen, they have no clue
Nice Colt. I know it is comforting to have on you while walking in the woods.

That's a really nice gun! Be sure the critter means you harm before you shoot it. Smokey may just want to admire your pistol.

Yea, and they usually have their earbuds in- they couldn’t hear a grizzly 10 ft away.

Took my Monday off and went to Hillsborough River State Park. Haven't been here since the pandemic kicked off. Sorry no carry pics, every time I stopped to even get a picture mosquitoes would swarm me and I don't carry spray.

Great Pictures looks like a nice State Park.
I will be in Florida for two weeks in August. I may need to plan a day trip!!!

Last Sunday my wife decided she wanted to go hike a route that I wasn't sure she could handle. Similar to my last one, it was 6.3 miles one way, with 2,450' elevation gain and topping out around 11,000'. She has asthma so I was concerned. But she made it, and we had a great day.

Mummy Mountain looms ahead.
IMG_20220731_085859231_HDR.jpg

A wide variety of mushrooms were popping up along the trail. I suspected these ones were not friendly. I mean, they look angry. And they had a knife!
IMG_20220731_101718783_HDR.jpg

Getting closer.
IMG_20220731_105022407_HDR.jpg

Quick look back.
IMG_20220731_105924326_HDR.jpg

Bumped into some locals.
IMG_20220731_124215758.jpg

Almost there!
IMG_20220731_113852305_HDR.jpg

At long last we arrived.
IMG_20220731_114932800.jpg

So, I took only one gun this time, mostly to cut weight. I chose the G20 with 190gr copper mono solids. I removed the light, and made use of a couple 10rd mags. So 10 rounds in the gun, and 10 in the 5.11 pouch on my belt. Though I couldn't help but thrown a full 15 rounder in my pack, just in case. Less weight on my belt was a nice change.

We got back last week from spending a week in Colorado. We had a chance to hike in RMNP, Boulder and Red Rock Canyon. The view from the top of the Rockies is amazing. I was torn between bringing my Glock 29 or VP9SK. The VP9SK loaded with Underwood 147 grain +P hard cast ammo won out as I haven't put enough time in with the Glock and am no where near as accurate with it as I'd like.

I found myself with a meritorious day off and made plans to take care of lots of things on my to do list. Then, my dad suggested we go fishing. With him being 81 I figured my to do list will still be there whenever I get back.
IMG_20220802_100725667.jpg

It was a nice day. We had the place mostly to ourselves. The water was too warm for trout but the perch and crappie were hungry.
IMG_20220805_162411325.jpg

Unfortunately, the perch were way too small to keep. These guys however, will make for some nice filets.

I took my K6S and a "Dewclaw" from Scallywag Tactical. I ended up using the scissors on my Leatherman Juice.

Hiked out to an old cabin ruins in the backcountry

I had to cross the creek a couple of times

Not sure if it's clear but my foot was In the water and my Waterproofer (Nikswax) was still repelling water.

I like that view

Mrs and I just returned from @WisBorn old stomping ground near Gordon Wisconsin.
Mrs and I drove up and a few days later, our friends drove up and joined us for the last three days.
We fished the lake where our cabin was:

And hiked a little to Wisconsin’s largest waterfall. Actually this isn’t it… but we liked this one better

We also stopped by the local watering hole for some of Wisconsin’s finest ale. The locals had a good episode of gunsmoke playing on the tv. 9D28FCD0-C3A3-49C7-8391-892BAE6AD2C8.jpeg 8E6B15EC-8EA7-4568-A1F5-A17615833B34.jpeg

I headed up to the hunting property this past weekend. It was only supposed to be a high of 88, sort of cool compared to recent weather.

I wandered about seeing what I could see.

Lots of squirrels

A horse shoe washed out of somewhere. This photo does not show just how steep this hill is. The grade going from bottom to top of photo is got to be approaching 100% grade. My favorite AR at present was my firearm of choice that day. SBA3 pistol braced pistol, 9-inch 300 BO and AAC SDN-6 suppressor.

The shoe still had nearly all of the nails still in it and they were still clinched for the most part. It would be interesting to know how the horse lost this shoe or if possible this was his last shoe...

I shot two armadillos and failed to recover either of them. :( The first one, as best I can tell got back to his hole and the second one rolled/ran down into a deep ravine and I lost track of him. In the process of looking for both of them I can across this big old box turtle.

Thought you were going up at the end of this month? Looks like you had a good time!!!
It's hard to find a place that is more relaxing than UP-NORT (have a Northern Wisconsinite pronounce it for you:rofl:)
Great pictures :D
