This is the new Remarms iteration, previously called the "Hardwood Home Defense" and now (according to the box label) the "870 Tactical". Fit and finish look well done, and it cycles and ejects fine with dummy rounds. Sling is a Blue Force Gear hunting sling. This gun also available in a 5-shot version.

Remington's website bills the furniture as walnut, but could it possibly be just "walnut stained"?

I'm curious if all the internals are identical to legacy Rem 870s or have they slipped in a few proprietary pieces on this iteration to further separate RemArms from Remington.
I hope they will begin supplying spare parts for the Remington lines again.

This was made in Ilion NY. For some reason I was thinking that place had closed.

I'd take the forend and stock off and look at the unvarnished wood (if they've not coated the innards) to take a better guess on the type of wood. But from the distant picture... looking at the butt end of the stock where the grain shifts pattern... it looks walnut-ish to me. Maybe claro, which has largely replaced actual walnut, but somehow it doesn't really look like claro to these old eyes.

Looks like real walnut in the photo, but a closer view would help. IME they are pretty careful with how they word advertising. If it clearly states walnut it probably is.

What I can't see from the photo is the checkering. If it is the silly reverse stamped checkering Remington has used a lot in the past it would be a deal killer for me. If real cut checkering, I'd be interested. In the 1960's it was a lot cheaper to use the reverse stamp checkering vs cut checkering. But with modern machining there is no excuse to still use stampings.

A little closer view. Both fore-end and buttstock have the "fleur-de-lis" design. Not sure what it's supposed to mean, but evidently it's not unknown on Remington shotguns.

That definitely looks like Walnut. It'd look great refinished to let the grain feature show through, if you were so inclined. The fleur-de-lis is the little flower thingy in the checkering. I prefer straight checkering, but lots of companies, and apparently some people, consider that little extra to be added value.

Hopefully the new guns are good and solid. It'd be great for "Remington" to get back on track a bit.

Nice looking shotgun; in appearance nearly identical to my main squeeze... early 1990's home defense 870 Express with 18" barrel. The Express was a so-called "budget" shotgun, but there's really nothing budget about it except perhaps the flat black finish of the receiver and barrel. I added a Choate magazine extension shortly after I bought it. It gives me 6 in the tube and is a hair shorter than the barrel rather than a hair longer as the stock Remington extension is. I prefer the Choate, but no big deal as they both get the job done. It's nice to see Remarms is still cranking these out. If the internals are like the one I have, it's a sweet HD shotgun that will last a lifetime. If Remarms says walnut stock then I'm sure it is.

Not sure what if any dip there is in RemArms quality Vs. Remington of the last decade or so (we all know neither holds a candle to the Remingtons of old (60's&70's Wingmaster's and maybe 870 Police of any vintage) but the new wingmaster I looked at looked real nice and had a nice action for a gun right off the rack with no break in. Fit and finish looked pretty good to my eye but that "Hardwood Defense 870" looks like a proper fighting shotgun should and I'm a sucker for an 870. I love the way it looks and would be interested if I didn't already have a couple 870's. The "Home Defense 870" looks almost identical to the one I got and made even though it's half blued and half park'd, 20" IC bbl, etc..... I have pumped quite a few shells through it and the action is approaching nice.

870's with mag extensions and hardwood just look lean and mean. No frills, no unnecessary "tactical" nonsense. I'm in love with 870's and 590/500's. The fact that in this day and age you can get something like this for well under $1K is pretty awesome but I imagine as time goes on actual "Remington" 870's will gradually climb in price.

The "HD" or "Tactical" Remarms looks alot like my Express Magnum and my buddy's Special Purpose. I have quality rifle sights on my smoothbore 20" express mag.

A good fighting/defense shotgun the 870.......... I will always love these shotguns as long as they're reliable. IMG_20230201_194419.jpg
