I have an old model 12 that has a recoil pad that looks like this. It’s a 1927 16 gauge. I’m thinking about replacing it. Where is the best place to get one? I figure the old one is just held on with two screws.
The Winchester patent date pad would be an acceptable period pad to use. e rex is correct in that few Model 12s of that era had recoil pads, mostly just Trap and Skeet models. Yours has an aftermarket pad, and the one I suggested is actually from a little later on, ('40s to mid-late '50s) but would be the most correct of what's listed. The Winchester Trademark pad is from the '60s on, but could be used also.
If you wanted to be more correct, a buttplate would be most likely what it shipped with.
I have a Model 12 that left the factory in 1914. This is the original butt plate that came with it. Not exactly what you would call a "recoil pad". A hard piece of plastic, perhaps Hard Rubber. If you look closely you will see the upper screw enters the wood at a bit of an angle.
P.S.
It does appear the only Model 12s with recoil pads were the higher priced Trap and Skeet models. Looking through Dave Riffle's The Greatest Hammerless Repeating Shotgun Ever Built-The Model 12 1912-1964, there are many photos of high grade Model 12s with red recoil pads. Some are actually Winchester recoil pads, some are Jostam pads.
