Today I enjoyed the outdoors. I chose to carry......

I spent part of the morning in woods therapy! Also known as turkey hunting :)
My carry was Forest's (he was like a grandfather to me) Western Field 3" 410.

Didn't see or hear any turkeys while hunting. I sure made a pair of Sandhills mad. Not sure where their nest is...
That is a beautiful shotgun. Sorry you did not encounter any birds but it had to be a great day none the less

Took a very old (50s) Savage .22 bolt action to plink by a river. It is just barely into a rural area near here.

There are no known threats, no meth labs or such, but I keep my Sig "P225" (stamped on the slide), with German proof marks on my hip. It is identical with this Google image. You see the "P225" stamped on the slide, and possibly the same Made in (W) Germany.

The grip screws and surrounding areas in the German Sigs (vs. US copies) are dark.

I haven't been able to post in this thread for a while. Our farm work has been keeping us busy.
We were able to spray herbicide on our northern farm yesterday. There are several old ponds there. I drove the semi and tanker while #1 son ran the sprayer.
20230518_172248.jpg That gave me time to take my flyrod that the lovely Mrs F had Santa bring me last Christmas. I caught my first fish (such that it was....) with the new MOONSHINE 3wt 7'6" Drifter rod.
20230518_171546.jpg
The rod was most excellent! What a thrill to cast a tiny weightless black ant halfway across the pond! The fishing was good but the fish were tiny green sunfish. Oh well...?!

And yes....in the spirit of our outstanding thread.....I chose to carry my LCP as usual. 20230518_171558.jpg

I thought you might be busy with the farm. Some farmers just getting in the fields here and some have corn about an inch tall. Nice fly fishing set up.

I finally got to get out on my kayak. The weather has been very unsettled so I didn't go far.

This little reservoir is where the state record Bluegill (12.75 inches) was caught. A couple weeks ago, a walleye that was nearly the record was caught here as well.

I don't think I've ever seen this reservoir this full. It was calm and I had the place to myself when I got there. Fishing was relatively slow but I wasn't trying too hard. Several small perch to make it interesting though. Between the snipes, pipers, Great Blue Herons, the sandwich and bottle of tea I brought, I had plenty of distractions.
I was slowly making my way to the take out when this guy hit.

Only 24 inches but big enough for some fillets.

It was nice to get out. I had the K6S.

Looks like a great place to relax. Nice catch

Went for a walk this morning on the multi-use trail near home. I grabbed a walking stick that I cut/stripped last fall to determine how I want to finish it.
20230520_121131.jpg
Just going to shorten it a couple of inches round off the top and stain it.
My carry was my boring 442 loaded with 158 grain hollow points.
20230520_122624.jpg
I did enjoy the wildflowers.

Why do we always try to kill dandelions in our yards?

After some load testing and handgun practice that I won't clutter the thread with, I went for a walk along the gulch to Hole-in-the-Wall Mine.

Just a quick look back on the "trail".
IMG_20230520_122015052.jpg

Here's the Wall.
IMG_20230520_125008945_HDR.jpg

On the other side of the Wall is the Mine. Which I did not crawl into, if only because the entrance was soaked with the recent rain. (Closer wasn't better as far as pictures go)
IMG_20230520_124245090.jpg

It was humid from all the recent rain, but also very green in places.
IMG_20230520_130932238_HDR.jpg

I was carrying my G29 with TLR-8a light/laser, in a newly acquired C&G holster.

180gr XTPs at 1150fps is probably enough for mountain lions, which frequently the area. I've never seen one though. Unfortunately.

I like the holster! Neat camo pattern....

Thanks! I chose the pattern because if it peeks out under a cover garment, it doesn't really look like a holster. It might have been better if if were a little darker, but it works. It's clearly made for a G20/G21 though. C&G were the only place I found that would make a holster for a G29 with a TLR-8a light/laser.

Went to the International Crane Foundation in Baraboo, WI Wednesday.
They have 15 species of cranes and some nice hiking trails that are abundant in wildflowers and wildlife.

Sorry I forgot to take a picture of my Kimber R7 Mako that I carried for the 3 miles of hiking and the time Mrs WisBorn and I spent enjoying the cranes.
I do enjoy the success story about bringing back the Sandhill Cranes, but now we need to control there numbers....

Looks like a great day.
Agree numbers do need to be controlled. I would purchase a controlled hunt license.

That's great @WisBorn.
My fuel guy is going to Lubbock , TX to hunt Sandhill crane this fall. (I thought they were protected.)
Ribeye of the sky.
I know that there are a few states that they can be hunted in.
My hunting land is only a few miles from a major stopping point for Sandhills. There are thousands of them in the marshes at (Sandhill Game Farm) in October.

I would think you should just breast them out....

I headed back to the blind to replace my cellular trail cam batteries and rid the traps of any dead mice(1) before Mrs F and I camp here some evening.
Everything is in order, the solar system is working. Propane in the tank.
My most recent gun purchase, the parkerized s&w 10-5 heavy barrel truck gun volunteered for the job. 20230528_181816.jpg 20230528_175546.jpg
There was a barn swallow nest on my porch light. 20230528_174746.jpg
My good old Honda was up for the task also. I do wish they were made in the USA....but they sure do make some fine products.
20230528_182225.jpg
ETA
As a side note, after seeing all the deer damage to the soybeans surrounding the hunting blind, I am not going to be as merciful as usual when hunting season rolls around. When your soybeans are planted early in April and they're the first fresh green forage aroind.....the deer hit it hard. Really hard. We have been replanting the perimeters of fields and have more to do.
No unfilled tags this fall!
Everyone in the family is getting venison!

That 10-5 is a good looking pistol. At least the barn swallows try to control mosquitoes.
I remember the Honda "Big Red" three wheeler. A farmer I worked for had one and it would out perform my Kawasaki 250.
So, you are opening Armored Farmers guide service? Sign me up.

Mount Rosa/St. Mary's Falls Trail
I'm not sure if this is helpful
20230529_070212.jpg

I started at the blue dot and turned around at the red dot. 16 miles round trip, 3000 foot elevation gain. It kicked every last bit of my ass.

20230528_120755.jpg
Obligatory Gun photo.

20230528_102655.jpg

And The Tilley.
20230528_071326.jpg
This wasn't part of the hike, there is a field across the street from where I live where balloonists take off. I just happened to catch that walking out the door on my way.
20230528_090842.jpg Start of the trail.
20230528_091735.jpg

A Wood Pecker did that.
20230528_094449.jpg

East side of Buffalo Cañon

20230528_110440.jpg
Stove Mountain. It clouded up and it sprinkled a little but nothing major. I have a rule, first Thunderclap I hear I turn around.
20230528_112429.jpg
You have to hike along this ridge for about 7 miles before you actually set foot on Mount Rosa. It took me 6 hours to get out there. I was maybe a mile from the summit and I wasn't going to make it before dark .
20230528_134652.jpg

This is where I turned around.

In order to get to Mount Rosa you go through that gate, turn right, walk down the Fire Road about 50 ft and turn left onto the trail. From there it's a bottom mile and a half to the summit and I just didn't have it in me.
