GG&G @ MidwayUSA for $36.99. Are the channels on either side of the part so that one does not have to remove the "dimples" in the mag tube? Or would I still have to remove the dimples?

Those slots allow for install/removal of the follower without removing the dimples. The dimples would only need to be removed if you wanted to add a magazine extension.

It's already got an extension. Does that mean it doesn't have the "dimples?"

But do you really need it? No, not really.

A metal follower will definitely be more durable than a plastic follower. Will he ever be able to wear out a plastic follower? Probably not...but, I also probaby won't need the ABS or airbags in my car. But they're nice to have as insurance and don't add any negatives.

That metal piece is basically $37 insurance that he'll never have a follower issue.

During forty-eight years of shooting the same 870 TB weekly at trap I can say that the plastic follower can cause problems, both in the 870 and 1100. Wear of the o.d. can cause it to stick making loading the mag for doubles a pain. All my Remington repeating shotguns now have metal followers. Not needed if you only shoot singles.
