.44 Mag Rossi R92 question

I think there are a couple of cast bullet sellers that have them. For molds, I know that Accurate Molds has a couple of different .44 cal full wadcutters, and I would expect Arsenal and probably also Mihec as well.

Well, I think it may take some experimentation. And what works in one person's rifle, may not work in yours. I'd avoid SWC's, but ya never know. I hit it right on my first try with a 200 grain cast bullet in my .357 R92. It's overall length that lever guns are really fussy about.

I have experience only with 357 in the Rossi 92 but I am going to advise to only load a few rounds of anything you intend to try in either caliber to avoid having to break down ammo that doesn't work. My 357 is pretty finicky about what bullet is used unless it's a round nose or loaded as a 38 special in a 38 case. Anything works in the shorter case. I may be wrong but would expect the same from the 44 magnum. Sometimes jiggling the lever works with loading the longer case load and might take long enough to miss a second shot if needed.

Edited to add:, I have to amend the anything works statement. Full wadcutters don't, period, but I think they would work well for up close little whitetails. Maybe if loaded longer they would. Does anyone offer a FWC bullet or mold in 44 caliber? Never being interested I have never looked for either.
Rim Rock does, I have one for my catalog but haven't entered it yet. I have a sampling of all of their bullets for that matter. https://rimrockbullets.com/xcart/-44-200-gr-dewc-fb-per-500-anti-personel-.html

LEE used to make a full WC in .430". But that begs the question, why would you want to shoot full wadcutters out of a rifle? When you increase the velocity with full WC's they tend to tumble. Or did I miss something?

I am thinking hard about a Rossi R92 in .44 magnum for deer hunting. However, I want to use cast bullets. Have any of you guys that have one of these shot semi wadcutters or Keith bullets out of your rifle. I do not want to use jacketed bullets, but want to use bullets that I cast. I want to make sure that it will feed them before I go down the path of buying one.

I bought my '92 Rossi .44 Magnum last June. Like you, I'm only interested in shooting bullets that I cast.

As built, it would...sort of....feed my Keith-type SWC that I cast from a 429421 mold. But with a little work it now feeds them perfectly.

I relieved a little off the cartridge stop to allow the cartridge to back out of the magazine tube a bit further-

But the two things that helped the most were slightly chamfering and polishing the top of the magazine opening and slightly beveling and polishing the underside of the cartridge stop. I did both of these with a Dremel tool and one of the rubber polishing bits. Didn't remove a whole lot of material, mostly polished.

Working the top of the magazine opening allows the cartridge to exit a bit sooner and more smoothly. Beveling and polishing the cartridge stop really helps the noses of the bullets to slip by.

Although it works fine with the true Keith SWC, mine will not feed bullets cast from my RCBS 44-250KT mold as those bullets have a slightly longer nose than the 429421 bullets.

All that said, I bought my Rossi .44 Magnum as a companion to my multiple .44 Special revolvers and of course it feeds the shorter .44 Specials just fine.

I would like to help but went a different route after looking at several lever actions, a way overpriced m77 44, and a couple of old Ruger Deerfield carbines, I settled on a 22" stainless takedown CVA Scout topped with a Leopold 1.5-4 VX freedom scope , so far it hasn't been real picky on ammo, I sighted it in with Winchester 240 gr JSP at 100 yards, then shot everything from 44spc cowboy action loads to the 270 gr Federal Hammerdown and all of it hit in un a pie plate size area so that let me know a rezero would be pretty easy if I change ammo for some reason
t know it's not a sexy lever action but you can't really argue with an accurate one and done shot....might be an option for you to look at

I have exactly that rifle and do recommend it for a simple takedown and backpack, truck gun and backyard deer rifle. But it ain't no lever gun :)!

And now I have exactly the rifle the OP has interest in. I bought a 16 inches long, R92 in .44 Magnum a few hours ago. I cannot pick it up due to being out of state and will need to wait until I pass back through. The CCl does not get past the check out of state. Rifle looks nice, real clean, there is a little gap at the reciver rear to stock fit. Not much. Looks good really.

If it shoots cast fine, if not, I do not care. I can load jacketed and have plenty. I have a Blackhawk in both .44 and .45 so I would have taken either, a .44 stainless R92 is good with me. The .45 they had was blued, sorry, stainless for me all the way :).

I do feel like a traitor to Marlin. But at least I have bought two Marlins from Ruger so they cannot complain I did not support their efforts ;).
