Ruger Super Blackhawk on the way

I already have a Ruger Vaquero in 357 magnum, but I didn't have any single actions in 44 magnum. I guess I better get cranking on the Dillon and get some ammo made up.

Many years ago I had a stainless Super Blackhawk with a "Magna-Ported" 7½" barrel.
I liked the revolver a lot but, regrettably sent it down the road.
I've said it before but, if it would've been 4⅝" (like yoursl) or 5½" I'm sure I would've kept it; that 7½" was just too much for my taste.
Congratulations on a fine revolver!

I fell hard for this model more than ten years ago, during the Obama ammo/gun drought. It was one of the first new handguns I'd seen in my LGS for months, and I didn't hesitate. I later added a Belt Mountain cylinder pin, but otherwise the gun is still as purchased. Here's a pic with its .32 siblings.

Really nice shooter but I wouldn't care to shoot it with that grip frame. I was introduced to 44 magnum with that style grip and still remember how large the bruise on my middle finger was. Dragoon frame is great though.

Great collection. So the question is, how does it shoot? The only other 44 magnum I own is a Ruger Alaskan. According to specs online, they weigh the same. I'm guessing this will be a little easier to shoot though.

I actually read the Dragoon frame was known for busting knuckles. Guess we will find out soon enough lol.

I have read the same but neither of mine does. I've often wondered how it is possible with all the clearance it has.

I have an original Vaquero in 44mag and the Super Blackhawk w/ 7.5" barrel. Neither one bruises me. I have buddies that have shot them and depending upon how they grip and hand size one or the other bruises them. I haven't shot either one in a long time. My big bore go to is a 5.5" Blackhawk 45colt/ACP. Wild to mild. I'd say my most used single actions now are a Single 7 and a Single Six w/ 32 H&R

My knuckle buster is a Taurus in 45 Colt. I finally ran down a Pachmyer rubber grip on ebay for it that cured that problem.
Odd, I prefer the Dragoon frame. I get low on it though, so it doesn't roll through my hand in recoil.
I take a pounding.
Hold right but thumb left, so can shoot kinda quick.
200 grainers max'd in a .44 mag are fine by me.
300's would tear me up.
I have been eyeing one of these. I have no need for double action in a .44mag. I have the SBH Hunter with the Bisley grip I use for deer. The Bisley grip grip sends the recoil back instead of up is the simple way to explain. Shooting big bores is all in the grip. I have never had an issue with getting knuckles busted with big bores...
Dragoon works for me.

Admit though, the 3 screw shorty flattops were neat, grip just didn't work for me.
Thought about a NM 4 5/8" .357 blued and swapping in a stainless dragoon frame.

With the standard XR3-RED grip frame, I have found that the trigger guard will bite the first finger on the off hand, as it gets just a bit under the guard. I changed my technique so that my first finger is slightly curled so that the trigger guard rests on it to alleviate this.

Im on my 3rd.
First was beat up and a shot fantastic.
Shoulda kept it ( oops ).
2nd was mint w fantastic bluing. Shot like crap.
3rd is my dads, beat up w Ruger brass frame. Unfortunately doesnt letter leaving the factory w such. Dunno if dad added it or it was done by somebody else.
Think I remember Gil Hebard sold Ruger brass frames and this gun was from Gil Hebard ( so says Ruger letter ).

I have a 3 screw and a new model BlackHawk. I had to slick up the trigger works of the new modle with my set of Brownells' stones a little and drop one side of the hammer spring to make it almost identical to the 3 screw. No flies at all on the new model if you are willing to do a tiny bit of work Mine is an older new model and Ruger may have fixed it where it isn't necessary now.
