She came to visit yesterday along with her mother and two sisters, She was a happy young woman having just passed hunter's safety with the highest score in the class but a bit bummed at missing only one question. If she had gotten them all correct she would have been automatically entered in all the state's draw hunts.I didn't ask how she thought she would be able to go on any of the hunts. Deer would be the only reasonable one as they are numerous below the near by caprock but difficult to find in the sand dunes. She also gets to go to the Whittington Center in August to shoot. Pawpaw bought her a new Savage 22 rifle to use Saturday. She is on the fence about shooting a pistol saying it has to be with one hand. I told her that was the standard years ago so not to worry about it and will work with her this summer to familiarize her with the technique. I think I remember how it's done. Duh. If she is strong enough she can use my Ruger MK IV. She is only 5' 2" and maybe a 115 pounds and I don't know how much shooting will be done. If it's a lot it may tire her out. I have a MK III 22/45 lite that won't but it's so bouncy I doubt she would be very good with it. I'm certainly not.

Good for her! What kind of deer do you get down there, Coues?

The majority are mulies but there is a small area containing blacktails. They were off limits for hunting for years but must have thrived because hunting is allowed now. I had a great picture of four of the bucks together but didn't back it up soon enough and lost it in a hard drive meltdown. When I traveled US 380 some it was fairly common to see them in the morning on the south side of the road after it exits Polecat Canyon. For some reason I have never seen a deer on the north side of that highway.

I taught her to shoot. I bought a Crickett rifle especially for her when she was five years old. As soon as she was big enough to hold my Ruger SR22 I started her on handguns. I would load one round in it at first for safety reasons. It wasn't long until she got a full magazine because she had safety down pat. Now she makes granpa, pawpaw, and uncle stay on their toes to keep up with her. She is definately a gungirl. All you have to do is say "let''s go shoot" and she is loading things up.

Neither of my kids ever showed any interest in hunting. My son likes to shoot occasionally. But my oldest granddaughter (just turned 16) has been after me to teach her to shoot. We've gone to the range at least once a month for the last few months. She is most interested in handguns but has shot rifles and spent some time on the skeet course. She is pretty good with a rifle and making progress with a handgun. I doubt if she will ever want to hunt though.

We were at the range this morning and she got a special treat. One of the regulars where I shoot has a LOT of nice toys. He brings them and often lets me shoot them. Today he bought a full auto British Sten 9mm sub-machine gun. She ran 4 mags through it. That cost me almost $40 in ammo, but the smile on her face was worth every penny.

I also have a 14-year-old grandson who enjoys shooting too. But he lives 400 miles away, so I don't get to take him shooting nearly as much.

The 17 y.o. grand-nephew that I had intended to leave my collection has (according to his grandpa) been around his "woke" school buddies too much. About 4-5 years ago, I had wanted to give him a .177 pellet rifle but his mother shut me down on that very quickly. Now he isn't interested.
There may be an alternative. His younger sister (11) was just given a Winchester Wildcat .22LR rifle and, from what I hear, she's getting to be a decent shot.

My youngest liked shooting IHMSA silhouettes w her grandpas Exemplar.

She also liked a Walther P22 because it shot " fire ".

Now older w health issue, tremor and risk of retina detachment......rifles off the bench. I think the Ruger #1B in .22 K hornet will be low enough in recoil for her to blow up some pop cans out to 200

My kid will be 16 in May. Two years ago she handed my 1911 back to me after two shots I doubt she would now. She shoots her 12 guage semi-auto with HV loads and likes it. Her 12 year old sister is following in her foot steps. All I have to do when I say "Let's go shoot" is stand back and point at what needs to be loaded but somehow they are hardly ever around when it's time to unload. :D They have a soon to be 5 year old sister. Mean as she is sometimes I'm scared to think about putting a gun in her hands. Just kidding. She will do fine.

They are the third and final generation I will get to teach. If counting my wife it would be four and I have enjoyed every minute spent doing it.
