Direct thread vs QD

View attachment 1189668

I was going to start a new thread but I'll post here and maybe do a new thread. My dilemma lately has been muzzle devices / flash hiders.
I have the Dead Air Key Mo Adapter $250 (aka hub) for my DA Nomad-L. To use it you need to mount $90 Key Mo flash hiders and muzzle brakes on your rifle.
If you want to run your suppressor on multiple rifles / AR15's - $90 flash hiders get expensive fast!!!

Why is that a dilemma? My Deer hunting AR is not set up with a Key Mo Flash hider and it cant use my suppressor. Every new AR I obtain (I have 6+), I have to mount more $90 flash hiders on them. That's annoying!

Basically Dead Air gets you on both the expense of the can and the accessories.

Turns out Griffin makes 2 adapters that fit on on Nato standard A1/A2 flash hiders that will work with my 30 cal DA Nomad can. For me that's revolutionary!
No more buying expensive $100 muzzle devices, shims to time them, plus the annoyance when you cant get the flash hider to time perfectly. I have multiple AR15's both rifles and pistols. Using these mounts, I can mount my suppressor on any of them.

I saw the A2 adapter in person at a gun shop. It's a compression type fitting that while easily swapped among rifles, it is not a Quick Change.
Jump to 12m36s of this video to see how it is installed:

I just ordered the 2nd one - the gatelok adapter. Jump to 2m50s to see how easy this can comes off a standard A2 flash hider.

Both adapters will work with 223 & 30 cal rifles (with my 30 cal Nomad) w/ A2 Flash Hiders or Griffin's flash hider / muzzle brakes.

I'm pretty sure there is a weight savings as well, by going with the Griffin Adapters over the DA Keymo + Keymo Flash Hiders. I haven't done the math though.

side note coupon code: AR15 on Griffin's website gets you 10% off your order.

Quoting myself, a not so positive update on the Gate Lock adapter.
I doesn't fit any of my 5 Palmetto State Armory A2 Flash Hiders.

It does fit on my 2 Remington owned Bushmaster A2 Flash Hider's and my Windham A2 Flash Hider. Both companies are out of business.
Griffin Hub2.JPG Griffin Hub3.JPG

Of my 5 PSA uppers with A2 Flash Hiders:
2 FH's are too wide the GL adapter wont fit over it.
2 FH's the gate lock will fit over but not lock onto the rear most groove. Groove is too thick.
1 FH is pinned I believe the pin is preventing the gate lok from fully seating.

I also have 2 more uppers that are missing flash hiders altogether.
My goal with the Griffin Gate Lok adapter was not to have to buy $100 flash hiders. I don't think I can recommend this product.

That's disappointing, I was really starting to this was the answer to my question.

Yeah and Griffin isn't being forth coming on which A2 Flash Hiders will work. Their rep is on another board where I'm asking them to recommend a Flash Hider that doesn't cost $100. If I need to buy their $100 Flash Hider, I'll stick with my $100 Dead Air Key Mo Flash Hiders. Seems like false advertising to me.

Ultimately the DA keymo locks the suppressor to your barrel and has no movement. The gate lok still allows the suppressor to rotate on the flash hider.

They could do some leg work and figure out what A2 flash hiders will work with their product. I think they tested it on some old Bushmaster FH's and called it good.
Lot of people like to make jokes about Palmetto State Armory - "you get what you deserve" but the fact that Griffin cant recommend any FH other than own, makes me think this company is not worth dealing with.

I'd buy Larue Flash Hiders if I knew they would work:

Griffin's rep finally chimed in 3 days later. Aero Precision A2 flash hiders ($10) will work with their gate-lok adapter.

"The aero precision A2’s work. They are probably made by Swissomation.
Those units have diameters down at .860 or .861 (the bottom of the print), our devices target .8627 +-.0004”

Could you just put thread tape on the thread of the barrel? My can keeps moving every dozen or so shots

And there in lies the drawback of direct thread. Sure it shortest and lightest, but it’s also the least secure. Works well on hunting rifles, not so much on defensive or semi-autos that you want to shoot without worrying about the can coming loose constantly.

I even gave it a good turn, and it still came loose. I’m going to try thread tape tomorrow

I run the Griffin EZ lok on pistols, 3 lug on PCC & direct thread on 22. Also have a SOCOM MINI2 that lives on an AR

Just ordered the Accipiter and Five by Five. Now I really have to make a decision on the mounts.

Right now I'm torn between the Gyrex and the Rearden taper mount.

I'd say you've got some time to make decisions, but just saw a guy post a 5 day Form 4 approval, so maybe not! Lol.

The Rearden muzzle devices are a bit narrower and lighter if that matters, our Gyrex is a little quicker with much more substantial threads and taper, but the muzzle devices with a 1-1/8 width at the fat end of the taper do look a little out of place on skinny sporter barrels.

I'm trying to find time to get some helix port brakes done, but at the moment we're out of those in all sizes, only have single port in 1/2-28 .264 cal, and single port & mini brakes in 5/8-24 .30 cal and other thread & caliber combos.

I actually think your Gyrex would be better for all of the guns I will be using these on, I just can't convince myself to put a muzzle brake on it in case I decide to shoot them unsuppressed, with the exceptionof the SBR's since they're under 12". That's really the only reason I am considering the Rearden since they offer flash hiders in addition to muzzle brakes.

Going back to the Griffin Gate-Lok, I got 2 $10 Wilson Combat A2 Flash Hiders in from Brownell's. It works perfectly with them.
So basically the following A2 Flash Hiders work:

Wilson Combat
Windham
Bushmaster
Aero Precision

I would bet a Colt or FN A2 Flash Hider would work. Colt from what I can tell doesn't sell parts to the general public. I didn't check FN.
PSA A2 Flash Hiders do not work with the Gate-Lok. I can't speak to any others like S&W or Ruger.

I only have the one suppressor for centerfire weapons, and one for .22LR ones.
The .22 can is, of course, a threaded model, but I opted for a QD one for centerfires.
I got the Surefire SOCOM 762 mini2. It will fit on the ARs, the Ruger American, the Remington 700 Classic...

I forgot to mention the other day, but if you do decide you want any of our mounts, adapters or muzzle devices, don't check out on the site. Message us letting us know what you want, as any single mount, adapter or adapter & muzzle device combo is discounted 40% with each can purchase.

I'll make sure I do reach out once I make a decision on which to get. Thank you, and I'm looking forward to seeing your workmanship first hand, I'm sure I'll be pleased.

With the recent eForms predicament and work travel slowing everything down, I was able to certify today and get everything submitted.

Any takers on how long it'll take a trust with 2 RP's who both have DoD clearances to get approved?

I am over a year on a couple cans right now

I don't mind direct thread if I am just using it on 1 firearm.

I really like QD if its fired on a number of different guns.
