Kinda/sorta. I only got three shots off before it started raining out of the blue. Range was 25 yards. Load was 90 grains of Swiss 3F with a patched .530 round ball. Patch was part of an old T shirt cut at the muzzle and lubed with olive oil. First shot was wide to the left. There was a slight delay between priming charge and main charge I wasn't expecting so I may have pulled it off. I was more prepared for the next two. Red square is 5 1/2" high X 4 1/4" wide. Ace is 4 1/4" high X 3 3/8 wide. Holes at the bottom are 1 1/2" center to center.

Were you standing or using a rest? How was cleaning, not too bad? It will be interesting to see what it does at 100 yards when you get the opportunity to shoot without rain.

I was propped across the porch railing. Dunno, I haven't cleaned it yet. I don't foresee any problems tho. Not much different than cleaning a P53 Enfield I wouldn't think.

Like i said it started raining on me yesterday so I grabbed my stuff and ran back in the house. Well I forgot I had left the ramrod out while I was shooting and it stormed all yesterday evening, all last night and it's still storming and the ramrod was out in it. I didn't oil it or have any kind of finish on it so it swelled and no longer fits AGAIN!!!!!. I don't know whether to try to shrink it by heating or just go ahead and turn it back down. If it ain't one thing it's another one. When I ordered the lock parts I got another ramrod and made a cleaning rod out of it. Since I don't like a ramrod sticking out past the muzzle that only leaves about 3/4 of an inch sticking out of an empty bore. I cut off about 6 inches of it and epoxied and pinned an old file handle onto it. Now it's plenty long enough to use comfortably and if I have to remove a stuck ball it should be fairly easy to do. I couldn't get the whole thing in one pic so you'll just have to imagine a long stick between the two ends.

We must be related since I seem to have the same type of luck you have lol. You could but the rod between flat boards and 2 thinner ones on each side so it will keep it straight as it dries. I've never tried it but old timers used to soak there rods in kerosene for a month or more, it makes them more flexible and less prone to breaking. Of course you need to be sure it's plenty thin enough it will sit after soaking.

@hawg , when you have some spare change, get yourself a good range rod for target practice. Get your wood rod fixed up and save it for show & tell. Also, I like to get a synthetic rod For hunting situations from Track of the wolf made to your specified length or get a blank and make it yourself.

Rain???? You need to practice loading and shooting that flintlock in the rain ;). What would old Daniel or Davy do?

Happy trails,
Dan

A synthetic rod.   Not happening. Nah I like my hickory rods. I'm not worried about the gun being out in the rain but I don't want me to get soaked. I've been caught out in it enough hunting with percussion guns to not care for it. I'll take my rain storms in the shower.:p

Big Baby!!! Oh sure, Drive to your hunting location in a modern car with a flintlock made from modern steels in your modern clothes sewn on a modern machine and poo poo a synthetic rod:) .

Whatever you wanna think Bubba. You don't know me. You don't know anything about me AW.

@hawg I had no intention to be offensive in any way. I put a smiley face at the end but I suppose typed words can be interpreted many ways.

Happy trails,
Dan

Something about the look and utility of a good straight grained hickory ramrod. I like em and they work just fine. Unless you leave them out in the rain. Or so I’m told…

Or fire them out the barrel lol.

This is something I don't understand. Who is so absent minded that they push a ramrod down the bore and leaves it there while they do something else? I've been shooting bp rifles for 54 years and I never came close to shooting one out of the barrel.

How was cleaning, not too bad?

I cleaned it about an hour ago. It was pretty straightforward. Not too much different than cleaning a percussion rifle with a pinned stock. The only thing is I pulled the lock off. I plugged the flash hole and filled the bore with hot soapy water and let it soak a few minutes. Then poured it out and repeated a few times. After that a few passes with a bore mop and it was about as clean as it was going to get. For those that say you have to clean the same day. It was 24 hours since it was fired. Where is all the rust and corrosion?

A novice shooter came to me looking for advice on shooting blackpowder rifles since I was the only guy in the area using them. I showed him the ropes and he shot a bit behind the house. He was getting the hang of things when suddenly he said, “uhoh.“ He was so excited about shooting the next shot that he launched his ramrod down range towards my hundred yard frames. Somewhere over a hundred yards of sage and rabbitbrush never to be seen again…

I really like the Delrin rods from TOW. They look good and they don't break. Most of my muzzleloaders have them. I gotta get one for my Great Plains rifle. You really can't go wrong with one.
