I'm considering making a jump into the 2011 arena, after exclusively shooting single-stack 1911s my whole life. I hear that the mags can be finicky. What can you all recommend both in terms of quality brands that will last, as well as good sources from which to purchase?

FYI, I'm looking at the Prodigy, the new Apollo 11, and perhaps the Tisas DS series. Yes, they're budget. No, I'm not looking for other suggestions on the guns, just on the mags.

Thanks!

I started with 2011 and went to 1911. mags were the biggest issue of 2011.

Mags Suggestion, stick with factory brand mags that were designed for the gun. Big Brand factory warranty is the best!

I never quite understood the point of trying a new platform with the cheapest possible examples of said platform. All that does is generally put a negative taste in your mouth.

As for the magazines, Staccato is the way to go. MBX are better, but a good deal more and the Staccato mags work fine.

Not familiar with the latter two. Are they 2011 “style” or the “Para” style DS?
2011 style with replaceable grip module. Neither is Para format.

Apollo 11 is from Live Free Armory, the new Tisas is from... Tisas. Or SDS? I think Tisas is the manufacturer and SDS distributes. Apollo has full-length rail and lots of slide cuts, as well as being optic ready. Tisas has a light rail but it's a shorter more traditional-length dust cover and the slide is a more traditional format as well. Both are budget offerings in the 2011 field (under $1k).

do you know if the Tisas takes STI 2011 mags?

Atlas magazines get good reviews. But I'd bet they are contracted from Checkmate.

I have not had any problem with Staccato Gen 2s and 3s. You are heavily stressing the springs and should consider them wear parts to be replaced periodically.

Platypus uses Glock magazines, Oracle uses SIG magazines in kind'a sort'a 2011 layouts.

True Jim. Neither feel much like a 2011. I like the Oracle, but it’s different in feel compared to a 2011. It’s very different in construction also.

Interesting. I stand corrected and will edit. They are not a mass production company and tooling up for their own magazines of a standard design would really have cost them.

Interesting. There is only one Platypus in my circle and I haven't got hold of it yet. It LOOKS like a 2011. I can see where the Oracle would feel different, it is oddly proportioned, the butt looks like it is more mag well funnel than grip.

I meant Tisas 1911’s use the same magazine as high end 1911’s do. They are the same design.

Much like a Tisas 2011 uses the same magazine as a high end 2011.
Great! I’m glade T-Sauce is using STI 2011 mags!

Will definitely buy one!

good.. now comes the $$$ issue. when a couple of magazines cost more than the gun you may have an addiction. STI-Infinity-MBX are typically good.. Have extra springs and followers on hand and a bottle brush.. The bottle brush is for cleaning them.

I have always heard how great MBX mags are.
I ordered 5 in 45 cal and they will not drop free. It’s very clear they are not square.
MBX would not stand behind them.
I wasted over $500.
Never another MBX for this 2011 fanboy with a mag addiction.

maybe your gun was not square….

JUST KIDDING! I have good experience with STI Gen 2 mags for 9mm 140mm & 180mm big stick. But they were not cheap $60 & $90 5-8 years ago

FWIW, I tested these 45 mags in a 9 mm Stacatto to rule out the possibility of an out of spec grip module.

I did have to insert the mag with the slide back since feeding height is different.

None of the MBX mags would drop free while factory Stacatto 45 mags dropped like a load from a dinosaur.

The mag specs as far as the body are the same for 9mm and 45, and maybe so for all current 2011 calibers, That’s why I could test them so.

manufacturing mistakes is one thing, but nit standing behind your $100 mags is another

$500 is a steep price to pay tho
