Hello everyone. I picked up a Ruger Max 9 a couple of weeks ago. I have put around two hundred rounds through it. Runs like a well oiled machine. One issue though is I noticed the rim on the spent brass is getting gouged pretty bad (see image). It is sharp and deep enough to take a small chunk off my thumb nail. It is not on all the brass. Lets say four to five out of twenty rounds. It seems to be getting more prevalent as I put more rounds through it. I am guessing maybe the extractor is causing it. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions.

Its the extractor causing it. Its a normal thing and I wouldnt worry about it.

If you reload, once you get to the point way down the road that the brass is getting ready to be scrapped, the rims will look all tore up due to it and will start to give you random malfunctions as the extractor wont always get a good grip. Good for malfunction drill practice. :)

I agree with the extractor diagnosis. If you feel confident, try taking out the extractor and inspecting it closely. If there is a burr, a very, very, very careful stoning could cure the issue.

Personally, as long as the gun ejects I wouldn't worry -- I don't even save my own 9x19 brass, my preference being to buy pre-processed brass for reloading.

Thank you kindly for your replies. I agree but my OCD does not.
Okay, I hear that. Do have a close look at the extractor, with or without removing it.
Is the gun a high round count? The recoil spring may be a little tired; think about replacing it. How far is it tossing the empties?
A lot of my 9mm brass is the worse for wear, having been through the press and the gun a lot. You're sure the brass was pristine before being used?
Good luck, keep us posted.

Good questions Moon. I have put around two hundred rounds through it. All the cartridges were new. I will keep you all posted. Thanks.

Some how I concluded the gun was used...my mistake. Mechanical wear shouldn't be an issue.
Again, keep us posted.
