Other than the intermediate length action, the Yugo M48 seems to have a top handguard that covers more of the rifle than a Karabiner 98. But is that the only difference? Superficially at least, they appear quite similar. I'm not a reenactor or anything, just curious.

bolt handle angle is different as well. The 98K has a sharp turn, with a recess milled into the stock. The M48 has a shallower bend. Not sharp like a 98K or '03, but not straight out like other Mausers.

Also, the M48 has a slit for a sling in the stock.. didn't the 98K have a steel disk like the Swede mausers for bolt dissassembly?

The 98 had a steel disk for bolt disassembly. The Swede disks were much less substantial and were for record keeping on the condition of the rifle at last armorer check. I've never seen a Swede with a dented disk like you'd expect from bolt disassembly.

The M48s don't have a disk of any kind. I've got an M48BO with lots of holes punched in the buttstock where I'm assuming someone disassembled the bolt on the stock without a steel disk...

Most Kar 98s had a takedown 'donut' but swedes did not.
Some of the later model kar 98s and some of the kriegsmarine rifles did not have a takedown 'donut' but would have a small hole drilled through the cupped buttplate to serve the same purpose and save in manufacturing time and cost.

There are some M48's flotaing around that are reworked K98, too. Local gunshop has one, but they want $225 for. They appear to be ground down, reblued and have had the wood cleaned, or new wood added. The one I seen looked brand new.

Those are K98's not M48's. They are captured K98's that have been reworked in yugoslavia and usually have had the receiver stamped with ther yugo crest. Yugo M48's have a intermediate length receiver which is about 1/4" shorter than a model 98 receiver. Alot of these reworked K98's have come out of other countries as well such as Czechoslovakia, Israel, and Russia.

Another, though not so obvious difference from a model 98 and Yugo 48, is that the M48 will have a groove cut into the breach end of the barrel for the extractor to fit in, while the breech end of a model 98 will be flat and square.

It looks like the main difference (other than the absence of the disk) is that the handguard on the M48 extends forward and back around the sights.

If I could find an extra M48 handguard I'd consider cutting it down ala the K98. But with the RC K98's around, it's probably worth grabbing one of them instead.

k98's sights are from 100 meters to 2000.
yugo m48's are from 200 meters to 2000.

does make a slight difference.
i've said it many times, i like my k98 better than my m48, better ergonomics as far as i'm concerned. the stock feels better, the weight is better balanced, and its more comfortable to shoot.
its not like i hate the m48, its a great shooter, but the k98 is my baby.

i ordered a yugo m48 from sog on nov 5, "oh, we're still waiting on the next shipment"... no problem... a week later i get a rifle box, oh must be the 48...

handguard looks a little short, it only goes to the rear barrel band... what's this, model 98 on the side???

so i'm looking around and it looks like i have a k98, with yugo crest, and no plate in the stock...

close enough for gov. work i guess...
