Forgive me gunnies, for I have sinned, it has been five years since my last confession.

I brought my SKS and beloved 1911 out to my local range two weeks ago. Upon returning I cleaned my beloved Kimber 1911 with Crimson Trace Grips with the greatest of detailed attention. I was tired and decided to wait to clean my (taken-for-granted and fourth hand) SKS. I was busy and continued to say "I will get to it tommorrow".

Today I opened my case, and there staring at me like accusing eyes, was the most disgraceful case of corrosion I have ever seen. I flashed back to a thread I had read before about how in the olden days we cleaned the shotties right after shooting because of  !!!Corrosive Primers!!! :banghead:

I didn't know that some rust would turn Blue.

I cleaned it, and it is still functional, but I have sinned against Senior Drill Instructor SSgt Warren and gunnies everywhere. I have taken my rifle for granted. I did not keep it clean and ready, as I kept myself (and my beloved Kimber) clean and ready.

I could not find SSgt Warren to pass judgement, so I leave it to you, honorable gunnies. What is my pennance?

Well, Drill Sergeant Brown made us run around our barracks with our rifle over our head screaming "I'm sorry I mistreated you, Mr M16. I promise to clean you every day and keep you squeaky clean." Repeat until your voice gives out, or you run into a tree.

Unfortunately in this day and age, that will get the SWAT team called out pretty quickly.

I'd say clean your SKS every day for two weeks. Be sure to apologize to your rifle, and promise you'll never do it again. Be sure to give your SKS plenty of exercise from now on, treat her right, and buy her something special every now and then.

I'd say you need to take the SKS to the range four times in the next two weeks, and give it a thorough cleaning every time.

That, plus send me a couple boxes of ammo for suggesting it. ;)

so was it external corrosion, or internal ?

Today I opened my case
hope you didn't leave it in one of those foam transport cases for 2 weeks.

Drop and do one-hundred three-count push ups.

Then dump out your dresser and fold and stow your clothes two times.

Then go to your bunk, have your wife take the sheets and blankets off and throw them all over the room. You have 90 seconds to make your bed. Do this three times.

Then go clean your rifle again.

It needs a companion to share its sorrows with. But make sure they speak the same language a Yugo may have problems relating to a Chinese.

The corrosion

I think it was corrosive primers because everywhere the gas went, I got blooms of red and blue rust. I saw it because the Action was open. It was also visible where the openings in the gas tube opened onto the exterior of the barrel. Everywhere else was fine. I have also not cleaned other rifles for a week, and not gotten anything even remotely like what I saw.

I am exposing my ignorance, but did the foam case worsen the rust?

I found the ammo at a gunshow (nice and cheap) the only thing I could read was the caliber. It may not be corrosive, but I can't imagine how else it could have gone that bad.

The internal corrosion (very luckily) did not compromise the integrety of the stress bearing areas of the chamber. The trigger assembly was still beautiful.

When AK-clones and SKSs really began to become popular in the retail trade, early Chinese - Norinco? China North Industries? - ammo was sold as being "mildly corrosive." (Sort of like being "a little bit" pregnant.)

For in those days shall the time of SKS cleaning be accomplished. And the trumpet shall sound, and the heavens shall fall, and the cleaning rags shall be rolled away like a scroll.

And then shall the seal on the Hoppes #9 be broken and a voice shall cry out, saying, "Behold, behold, are there none who shall scrub away the dirt and the corrosion? And hurt not the cosmoline nor touch the pitting and surface rust."

And thus shall the SKS be seen to be most filthy and unkept.

And the great gunsmith shall gather it unto himself, and rebuke those who have failed to clean the rifle saying, "Depart from me, O thou keeper of corrosion and rust. Depart from me and turn thy face away, for I know thee not."

Thus shall it come to pass when the days of the SKS cleaning be accomplished.

Amen.

Listen to, and follow, the following instructions: http://161.58.5.90/fmj/giveme25.wav

Repeat this process at least 10x/day, until the very thought of doing something as foul as this cannot even find a home in your mind. Then, listen to the following at least 1,000 times, so that you will understand how important it is to be faithful to your rifle.

Whoever is filthy, let him be filthy still....
Whoever is righteous, let him be righteous still.

He looked upon the man cleaning his gun, and said it is good.

Let he who hath profaned the words long written down be cast from the
temple until his retribution is paid.

(in other words...bad bad boy!!!! no gun range until its clean again!)

I didn't see anyone mention it so i will. You better plan on cleaning it again at least two more times before you put it away for any long term storage. The old timers who used to shoot only corrosive cleaned them everyday for three days minimum. That stuff gets into the pores of the metal and is really hard to completely remove. I would at the very least keep my eye on it for a while.

"... for though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I shall fear no evil, for Hillbilly is with me. His SKS and his AK they comfort me. He preparest a table for me upon which to cleaneth my weapons. He annointest my head with Hoppes No. 9, and my cup runneth over....

Surely accuracy and reliability shall be mine through all the days of my life, and I will be ringing the gong at the 300 yard mark forever..."

I am pretty sure that is the stuff

Is it corrosive or was it caused by something else?

Edited to add: Actually I am certain that is the stuff I used.

To those who write about anointing with Hoppe's #9 . . . I don't believe Hoppe's works well, if at all, on the corrosive residue left by corrosive primers. The corrosive salts are water soluble, so hot water or old time GI bore cleaner are indicated.

Its been two months since my last confession

This post actually made me open the safe and take a peek at the SKS.

Seems every time I go shooting I clean everything but the SKS. Its dirty as hell but no corrosion. Ended up cleaning it today.

BTW, I shoot Wolf ammo and it hasnt corroded anything.
