So I can't find more on this mall shooting that happened in New York. All the news said was that an "assault weapon" was used and that 2 people were shot. This is all we need, now the cooks are gonna use this to push another assault weapon ban..........

Fortunately no one was killed, the two he managed to hit were both in the legs. Also since this occured in an AWB state it may actually help to make the case that legislation of that sort is pointless.

AK47, one shot in knee (might lose the leg) and other in hand. Subdued by store employees after he ran out of ammo. Personally I don't think he intended to kill anyone, you go into a crowded mall with an AK47 and do that kind of damage? Think it was more of a cry for help but it's debatable

This happened about 25min north of me. "crowded mall" not the Hudson Valley mall! I also think there was no way he wanted to kill anyone. I've read it was an AK47. From what I have read he was upset because the state would not allow him to marry his boyfriend.

According to police, Bonelli began firing off a Hesse Model 47 assault rifle as he walked into the Best Buy store in the mall, just outside Kingston, about 55 miles south of Albany. After firing his way through the store, he made his way into the mall corridor and continued shooting until running out of ammunition near the center court. Bonelli fired off about 60 rounds, stopping at least once to reload, police said.

Those darn assault weapons are so deadly. He went through two of those dastardly 30 round magazines and managed to injure two people... Wow, I'm sure glad they banned them. Not only did that ban work, but that man just proved their killing efficiency.

I just saw pictures of it on the news. Didn't appear to have enough of the "AWB" features to be a banned weapon. (no bayonet lug, etc etc.) Not that the newsies pointed that out.

I'm not up on my AK terminology, but I would say it was a SAR-1 if I was guessing. (no thumbhole stock, "AK" type receiver, no bayonet lug, etc)

Regards,
Dave

I suspect that it was a Hesse (Vulcan) conversion of a Saiga. They made a number of conversions where the original forearm was retained. The end result looks like a weird marriage between a Saiga and an AK.
