Does anyone have this arrangement? How hard is it to swap out the upper? How does the rifle function, especially with cheapy ex-soviet ammo?
Thanks.
I'm sure this has been dealt with a million times but I havent seen it.

I have a Colt that was made in 7.62, it shoots Wolf with no problems. The only thing that is hard is finding magazines that hold more than 5 rounds. One of the easiest solutions is to use USGI 20 round magazines and only load 5 rounds in each. A factory Colt 7.62 magazine is just that, a blocked 20 rounder. It is very easy all that is needed is a complete upper with a bolt because I'm pretty sure they are different.

I got three of these, http://www.gunsnstuff.net/index.asp...-b06b-4bf5-8228-2db27c5647c5&uniqueid=4087242
for $25 shipped on AR15.com and they actually work pretty well! They look like USGI 30 round magazines. Everyone will tell you to stay away from USA brand magazines but their 7.62 magazines are the only ones that are availible and they work surprisingly well. DPMS is making "Franked mags" now which are AK magazines with a AR15 tower, I hear they work pretty well but are something like $45 a piece :what: Before DPMS made them USA did for a while and they reportedly worked well.

What is so hard about buying an AK47 to shoot soviet ammo from soviet magazines? Even the more expensive AKs are cheaper than most of these uppers. Add in the price and rarity of (decent sized) hand-crafted AK-upper mags and the annoyance of having to be careful with dirty ammunition because of the jamtastic stoner action, and it quickly becomes an exercise in futility.

Do you see AK47 owners hacking their guns apart to use garand stripper clips or taking a hacksaw to the FAL so it can use Enfield mags? No. Because it would be retarded.

I have already filed this idea with the 40 weaver rails front stock and the ninja sword/flashlight/flare gun/licorice dispenser weaver mount accessories that certain AR15 owners are fond of. Sort of the firearm equivalent of a honda civic with a 30 foot wing, neons and a loud farty muffler.

One of the AR-15 kit suppliers makes them. I can't remember offhand if it's Model 1 Sales or M&A. Check both ads in SGN. Not sure about mags, though.

Pop the pins. Remove the 5.56 upper. Replace it with the 7.62X39mm upper. Get one of the weird USA mags or another that works.

You're done.

I have a Colt 7.62x39 upper with my old SP1 and all I do is swap the 5.56 upper with it's bolt/carrier for the 7.62 upper with it's bolt/carrier and shoot. I have one Colt and 2 USA 7.62x39 mags and they all work.

That being said I have to agree in essence with BeerSlurpy (if not in style). I have the AR-Ak upper for completeness, but you might be better off spending the same money on an AK-clone and a dozen mags.
