I made my trip yesterday. I ended up with kinda sorta what I was looking for. It is a Mark I 1903, SN 1110901. Barrel dates to 6-18, gauged 0.5 MW bright and shiney too. Filled with lots and lots of cosmo. Stock is pretty rough, out of all the MKI and HN Springfields I looked at, I'd only really rate one as a great stock, and a couple of others good. At least mine didn't have Greek stampings all over it. Only 1 HN Springfield had a better muzzle reading than this one, it was a 44 rebarrel with a 0. A question I have is, the gun should be a 1919 build, and it has a 1918 barrel. It this just surplus barrels they had after WWII, and assembled with new recievers to make rifles? There is a P in a circle stamped on the wrist of the stock, I know that is some proof marking, but what exactly? Also, there is an A stamped on the barrel right under the date. Any significance there? There is still the SA on the very top, so I don't think it is a contractor barel, but most of you are smarter than me in this.

But it doesn't end there!

I then proceeded to look at the M1, just for the heck of it. A guy was there walking down the row of Greek Rack M1's and grabbing all that he could. I knew that he would be a while, so we went to eat. Came back a half hour later, and all the Rack M1's were restocked. I walked down te aisle, and wouldn't you know it? Two rifles that gauged a 1 and 1.5. The one that gauged 1.5 was even a 6 digit 247000 one. I took them up to the counter, both gauged 3 on the throat. I got to thinking, I have that other M1 that doesn't gauge as well as these, and doesn't feed right. Why not just spend $295 to fix the problem. I take a look at the parts, the one that gauges 1 still has the original barrel, and a nice stock. The 247000 one is a rebarrel and has Greek markings . SO, not only do I walk away wth a 1903, a Greek M1 followed me home too

How do you measure muzzle wear? I'd like to get up to the CMP store sometime, and when I do I wanna be able to guage the barrels I look at.

I hope you like your new toys. We're all pretty fortunate to have the CMP around.

Pics should work now.

The MW is gauged with a little tool that looks like a cartridge. They have them down there to borrow, bth the MW and TE gauges, and can show you how to use them. One thing I found is do not trust what is written on the tag,a s it is often incorrect.

Well, lets just do this then

The same requirements apply at the CMP store as apply to the CMP "mailorder" operation. The main requirements to buy a rifle are that you be a member of a CMP affiliated club, and that you have participated in some sort of organized marksmanship competition within the last few years. If you meet those, you can walk out of the CMP store with your very own Garand or Springfield.
