Well, after a couple years of wanting, I finally have everything in order to buy from the CMP. Since I only live 45 minutes away, this Saturday morning will be spent comparing Danish Rack Grade Springfields, and trying to figure out which one will be following me home.

It's going to be a very good day. :D

Here's my question, though. While most likely I'll be buying the Garand based on TE and MW measurements, I'd also like to get one that was built early on in WW2. I've been looking around at different Garand websites, but I have yet to find a clear listing that tells what serial numbers were built prior to the end of the war. I'll definitely be buying a Springfield Armory model, but can anyone help me out here?

I keep telling myself that I should buy based simply on MW and TE scores, but I have a feeling that once I get in the CMP North Store and get to see all those old war horses lined up, I'll want one with a little more history, rather than accuracy. I definitely like the idea of having a rifle that may have been carried in World War II. Who knows? Maybe I'll find the best of both worlds.

Thanks for the help!

It shouldn't be hard to find a WWII SA with a good TE and muzzle at the CMP. Almost all the rifles have been rebuilt and will not have the original barrel anyway. Just find the receivers that fits within your date range and then look at the barrel specs.

Trebor - both of mine are '43 mfg with original barrels. Both were graded rack grades, one USGI and one Greek. The USGI was a 1.5 MW and 3 TE, and the Greek was 1 MW and 3 TE.

They are there. Just dig through the rows of rifles, if you have a specific request, ask, they might go dig through the back room for you. Remember as rifles sell, the bring new ones out, too Just spend some time there, dig through, and you'll find one.

When I ordered my Garand from the CMP, it came from the Anniston shipping depot. I decided on one of the Danish SG SA rifles with a VAR barrel. What I got was a 6-digit (April 1941 !! ) rilfe and a VAR Barrel that looked near new. Both measurements were under 2 and all of the components were SA but not the correct drawing numbers for the s/n date. The stock was in poor shape but I did refinish it and it doesn't look too bad now. It's a very accurate shooter and I think I got one of the last Dane SG rifles with the VAR barrel.

The staff at the North Store should be able to find you a WWII-era serial number and they will go looking in the back if they have time. They do have gauges you can use to check the barrel.

There has been some discussion of price "changes" but noting yet on the CMP website. There was also talk of the North Store not currently having any SA SG rifles there. The Anniston depot is currently concentrating on the Greek returns and apparently they are beginning to find some very nice rifles including some that qualify for the Collector Grade level. It's possible that the CMP will be introducing a new category for Garands because of what they are finding.

Bring extra money for a case of ammo!! The Lake City ammo is genuine USGI and the price is a great deal.

Not trying to one-up George but I had a similarly happy occurence on my SG SA USGI Garand from CMP. 5-digit (19,4xx) manufactured in November 1939. Metal is beautiful, wood was so-so (nice except for many deep crate dings) and had been rearsenaled at RRIA).

Any M1 with a serial number under 3 million will have been a WWII weapon.
From postings on the CMP Forum you will not find any USGI rifles at The Store. They are all Greek returns. Not that there is anything wrong with them. The Greek returns may have parts made by foreign makers.

Nope, Danes have foreign parts. The only foreign part the Greeks may have is the stock.

Just print that linked chart and take with you, that's what I did. Also will give you an idea if the barrel is original.

Holy Crap! Prices have gone up, and new grades: http://www.odcmp.com/Store.htm

EDIT: Come to think about it, Springfield USGI racks have gone down in price :scrutiny:

EDIT again: Can anyone explain these:
R005GK-SA M1 GARAND, SPRINGFIELD ARMORY, POST WWII GREEK ISSUE $850.00
R005GK-HRA M1 GARAND, HARRINGTON & RICHARDSON GREEK ISSUE $900.00
