Just wondering if there is a concensus or a lean towards a certain rifle. thx for your thoughts again

Tackdriver? How about something chambered in .22-250?

You have any other requirements? Are you looking for a certain price range? Need left-handed?

Can't go wrong with a Savage 12 Varminter. Probably even regardless of price or handedness.

CZ 527 for sure. My .223 has been an awesome rifle. The set trigger breaks just under a pound, and with 50grain bullets 5 shot groups under 1/2" is the rule.

Another vote for the Savage 12LP. Excellent, beautiful rifle. It's the one all the varminters and bench rest guys are buzzing about at my local range. I got one and have to admit it's a real shooter.

Rem 700 VLS

I got one a few years ago for 'chuck popping and get 5 rounds in a jagged hole (when I hold up on my end) with El Cheapo WWB 45 gr hollows. 100 yards. Figured I better include range. Wouldn't be too impressive at 10 feet, would it?

The Tikka T3 Lite will be a tackdriver, but a T3 Varmint will shoot smaller groups more consistently, so I'd suggest a T3 Varmint :)

I have a T3 Lite in 308 and it normally prints 0.3-0.5MOA with Black Hills Match. 0.75MOA or better with good hunting ammo.

If you get the chance to handle a Tikka then the smoothness of the bolt, the bolt lift angle, and the quality machining will be enough to sway you away from the Remingtons.
Do Remingtons come with written accuracy guarantees? :D

There you go, mrrev! Four excellent rifles recommended. My advice: go out to a range near you and see if you can find examples of all four and shoot them. Best way to decide. I can honestly say that all four rifles recommended above are accurate, fine firearms. I have heard good things about all of them. Good luck! :)

Weatherby, has a line with Krieger barrels on them. They come chambered in .223 and my gunsmith has been working with one and they are very accurate.

If you check CDNN probably has some with a steep discount still.

I've had good luck with every .223 bolt gun I've ever had- they have all been good shooters. So far the list is:

Remington 788

Savage 340 (took a little tweaking)

Ruger M77 Mk2

Remington 700

My neighbor's kids used to love shooting the 788, I zeroed it dead on at 100 yards for them. They liked to fill 2 liter bottles with water and put them on their sides facing the bench. Then they would take turns trying to shoot through the bottle cap, they got pretty good at it and the bottles blew up better when they managed good hits.

That sounds like a lot of fun and would really keep the shooters interested in each others shooting. I'm going to try it!!

I guess it all depends on how big a tack you're considering.

My little Ruger 77 Mk II will put three shots into 1/2 MOA most anytime I do my part, and it doesn't seem to care what brand of ammo or what weight of bullet is used.

I mostly shoot handloads with 50-ish-grain bullets. I found some ancient reloads of my uncle's, with a sorta blunt 70-grain bullet. Same old half-MOA...

That all got easier after I put a Timney trigger in it, of course...

This man speaks the truth. :banghead:
