you should post this, or have a mod move this, into the blackpowder forum.

that being said:

www.dixiegunworks.com has a lot of kits, ranging from $70 smoothbore derringers to $700 LeMats.

I have a Thompson Center Patriot which I consider a "good" one.
Adjustable sights, set triggers, American walnut stock, lifetime warranty. I don't know if it is still being made, but I am sure you could find one.

What caliber is better for shooting out of a blackpowder handgun?

I already have a .50 caliber flintlock rifle but I notice a lot of flintlock and percussion pistols also come in .45 caliber.

Thanks

the lyman plains pistol is available in 50 and 54 percussion. It is very accurate and much more economical than the other quality single shots. It is also available in kit form.

The Pedersoli LePage is available in flint and percussion with percussion being much more easy to shoot accurately than flint.

The best option in percussion is either one of the custom European underhammers, such as those made by Andy Baumkircher and Tilo Dedinski; or the Hege-Siber. These are the top guns at the World Championships. Expensive, but well worth it.

Thanks

This gun would be for plinking and hunting backup (where legal)

I'd go for the LePage if for no other reason than the spur triggerguard feature. Makes for better control and accuracy. The checked grip is also better for my hand than the smooth birds head style. The Plains Pistol does have a short rammer but I don't know functional it is. I'd probably use a separate ramrod anyway. Actually, it comes down to personal preference. They are both nice pistols for the price.

I believe you can get the pedersoli kentucky in kit form. I just shot one of the .54 caliber ones-see above post.

It has an ideal trigger pull and is inherently way more accurate than my LePage Flintlock.
