This is a bit unnerving.

Quick and easy way to convert from km to miles. Divide by eight, and thne multiply by five.

It would be much simpler just to use honest miles in the first place. Let the French enjoy the (supposed) benefits of the so-called "metric" system, which was standardized by Napoleon so he could count his tribute quickly and easily.

I don't see how the thing in the photo can fly; it ain't got no wangs. But if that's all there is to it, yeah, a .308 centerpunch should bring it down all right.

Looked like a ducted fan (a motor driven turbine). Should hover like a helicopter with less noise.

What sci fi movie did I see those thing in, or rather how many sci fi movies have I seen those things in.

They had them in Carpenter's "They Live" in the 80s, but you had to wear the special sun glasses to see them. Interestingly enough the main character did in fact introduce one to a shotgun.

I cant remember for sure but i have some vague memory of some refference to a similar device from Huxley's "Brave New World" but im not sure.

Needless to say, any refference to such a drone in modern culture, be it literary or in film, will be making a refference to a dark and oppressive future. That alone should show what we as a people think of such things. This quite happily crosses any political ideological lines. Neither liberal or conservative wants state-operated drones circling the cities enforcing the sort of crimes that dont require actual police. The only people who want these things are agents of the state and utter morons. We have no shortage of either.

Art, I was thinking the same thing. I've got a Zero with a six foot wing span. Retractable landing gear. I've always wanted to arm the sucker.

Banzai!

You gave me another idea, have the R/C airplane go Kamikazee, gotta admit, it would be interesting.

Thing is, the source is The Drudge Report, which is just tinfoil hat with more drooling and sourceless slander.

Gotta take anything on that site with a grain of salt.

We live in interesting times

There was a Twilight Zone episode (not the original series, one of the newer versions in the late 80's early 90's) where there were drones monitoring the population. Some people convicted of crimes were marked on their foreheads. Anyone without the mark was forbidden to interact with those that had the mark. They acted as if they didn't exist. The drones kept track and made sure people followed the rules.

They were also present in the Nintendo Star Wars game when you got close to them a robotic voice would say "There's an escape attempt"

I vaguely remeber that Twilight Zone episode

Everybody here, at least, wants to take 'em down so they'd better make alot of them. :p

That's what I'm talkin' about. Thanks for the link and post a range report, ok?

I didn't get to this thread fast enough. Welcome to City 17?

When does Gordon show up? I wonder if he'd lend out his gravgun.....

I'm sure we could have fun with floating cameras. :p

it stands about 17 inches tall on its landing gear and can be carried in a backpack.

So I was right; the actual unit itself is roughly the size of a basketball, which means that a .308 will take it down instantly.

Man, oh man, oh man, I can't wait for my M1A to get here!!!! :D :D

As small as these things are reported to be and considering the capabiliities reported-a .308 would probably hit something important. However, that doesn't necessarily mean it will bring it down. A large part of the volume of this device is the propeller and plenum chamber. Unless balance is absolutely critical, a hole through the propeller is not going to matter that much. Nor a .30 hole in and out of the plenum chamber. Bringing it down is going to be a bit tougher than disabling it. Problem with disabling it is how to know that's been accomplished?

Video and GPS. Radio link for control. Anybody know what frequencies would be used? Would it be possible to jam the signals?

Well, I'll just train for quick double-taps. :D

Finally, a use for my 8ga!

Really though, these things might be a little hard to kill. First you have to know that it's there. These things being electric, they may not be so easy to hear.
With cameras being what they are today, there is no reason that they can't be hundreds of feet up and still read your underwear lable if you bend over.

Balance is very important, if it lost a blade the vibration alone could bring it down, plus the loss of thrust could also get it. Also a hit from anything against a propeller would destroy the prop and thus bring it down.

I really do not think these things are worth the quality of life impact they will have on people. No one would be the same in public if they knew they could be watched and recorded at anytime without any effort.

Also being recorded now and having your location and actions looked up in the future could put a damper on many law abiding activities. Who wants to do face to face gun transfers at a gun show if it could be stored for future use, the same goes for political protests. They would probably be some of the first targets.

I like Somekid's idea about using radio controlled airplanes- paint a big red ball on them and play kamakazie- Bonzai!- when questioned about your taking one of these out, play dumb and explain that you're new at this hobby and you got the controls mixed up- Bonzai! :neener:
