1997, guarding the skies of St.Petersburg, Russia ;)

There's something very cool about the old, worn pictures of people in uniform that comes through, even when you don't know them...

Terriffic thread.

Here are several of me, taken in Kosovo, between FEB and SEP '00.

(I don't have any digital pics taken in Afghanistan, they're all old-school pics.)

This... is the finest thread in existence, anywhere.

Thank you all for your service... if there was a "salute" smiley, it would be here.

If I can find an old pic of Dad back in WWII in the Pacific, I'll post it.

Thank you for sharing Max!

I was expecting plenty of USGI pictures, yours certaily is a welcome surprise.

A good percentage of us served during the Cold War. As you can imagine, Russia was our main focus. We even had targets on our shooting ranges that carried AKs and had little red stars on thier helmets, we called them "Ivan."

You will see alot of people post here about thanking vets for thier service to the U.S., but IMHO, any soldier that served thier country with honor, no matter what side of the fence they were on, are deserving of respect.

SALUTE!

+1, ID_Shooting!:) I for one am glad the Red Army is no longer a 'threat force', most of us had the highest respect for you and your (pardon the pun) comrades, Max. And thank you for your service to Finland, 8balls. Many in this part of the US are Finnish, and thank you for carrying on the tradition of Simo Heya!:)

ID_shooting, entropy, thanks!
Actually i served after the Cold war ended. However, during my military training days some of my teachers were officers who served in Russian contingents in Egypt and Syria...Also, in one of buildings in the regiment i served, there was a long ist of "peace-time" victories of Soviet Air Defense forces. This list contained several US planes, including U-2, some RB-57's and probably RC-135 or so.
I very glad these days are over.

Here's a picture of me at 6th Brigade camp in Kuwait in `94. Whaddya mean you can't see me? I'm the guy holding the camera! I somehow managed to get through my time without one photo of me in uniform other than the portrait taken at 3am during Basic, and I'm sure you guys don't want to see that. That is my humvee in the lower right corner, though. Nearby (but out of frame) is my M16A2 w/ M203.

Great pictures guys. Once again let me say that the beret is a stupid stupid hat. Doesnt keep the sun off your face, your ears warm or your head dry. Can you guys who are active ARMY wear a cap when doing things like working in the motor pool and various other day to day outside activities or is it BDUs and the Beret for everything?

The Beret is mostly for show, particularly now that the Army mandated the black ones and stole the Rangers tradition. Most knowledgeable troops wear boonies, Ridgeways, or their Kevlar while 'working' in an AO. Or watch caps like Rembrandt's son in the above pics. When given a choice in the field, I wore a boonie, or OD watch cap in cold weather.

yes, it's up to the unit comander what the uniform will be when working. of course, there's no beret silliness in the field. it's pretty much for looking pretty for all the office pukes. let me tell you how fun it is to wear a BLACK 100% WOOL hat in arizona.

well, putfile seems to be working again so i'll post a couple more. sorry if they're too big.

Max, I remember when my high school choir went to the then USSR (April 1989). There were soldiers everywhere. The uniforms were kinda cool looking, long winter coats, even those guys marching through the streets in formation were wearing what looked like a combination of a dress and working uniform. As an 18 year old kid, I just thought the uniforms were so cool.

What happened? :neener:

(Since you aren't a native English speaker, just to be sure you realize it, I am joking around. I don't want to accidentally offend.)

I knew there was no beret sillyness in the field. I was just wondering about the day to day garrison duty stuff.

Here's a couple

I've been a lurker here for a long time, but I though I'd finally register and post.

This is me and my M60 on the right getting ready to head to Germany for Reforger '82 from Pope AFB. You can see the blank adapter on the M16.

Sorry about the poor quality scan.

How about my Grandfather, Joseph Curry and his Ohio NG unit. 1929. He is the second cook from the left in the 2nd row. Death from within!

Yeah, Ike and Georgie were good pals of mine. They were cool with it. They both liked my beard too.

We're all laughing in the picture because Ike just let one loose.

Bad ass tankers

I am the second one from the right, without the nomex. In a far away land. Boy do I miss those 120mm's:neener:
