just pray you don't wind up like me, didn't realize that my wife and step-daughter were NOT making sure to adress the dog with the agreed upon name, i now have a 3 year old Min-pin that thinks her name is "Puppy".

which of course trumps what happened with my cat.... she's a Korat one of if not the oldest known breeds (THE oldest one to be consistently "bred pure" by man) when we got her we had her registered with a nice fairly elegant sounding name (as is typical with such critters) and one portion of which worked well as a two-syllable call-name "Takhli" (a place name in Thailand some here with an Air force background may recognize it). we had her less than a week and she'd been forever branded "Smurf"

Right off the bat...You don't have a Lab. She has YOU.
+10 to that! The first year with a lab can be a bit trying, just hold on. Once they hit 1 year, they mellow out, even though they never lose that "puppyish" enthusiasm for just about everything. They are among the most intelligent and loving breeds out there, and they're great with kids and other animals.

Mine are mixed, but they've happily co-existed with a ferret and and a parrot at various times. In fact, my youngest used to pick the ferret up and carry her around the house.

As far as names, they should be two syllables, first one dominant and somewhat staccato. Has to do with the way they percieve sound. One thing to watch for with a lab is the development of hip dysplasia. Have her checked for it starting at one year. Even if she does get it, it's easily treated with Cosamine (same stuff I take for my bad knee, but cheaper) if caught early. Do not ever give your dog Rimadyl or listen to anyone who tells you to!

You're in for an adventure--all the best!

(We should really have a "pictures of your dogs" thread)

How about Elvira, mistress of the dark? Mine's named Athena, and I have to agree, a distinctive two syllable name works best in the field. It would be nice to match a name with her character, but that may not be evident for awhile yet.

If pup is into sniffing and thoughtful contemplation, you could call her Camus (pronounced Kamoo) after the philosopher. If she seems aggressive, she could be Alpha. If she tends to test your patience, you could name her Beta. Or if she reminds you of a girl you once knew, she could be a Kelly, McLean, or Hellcat. If she's an old fashioned kind of girl, she could be Emmy, Bella or Geena.

My favorite old lab was named Sarah, because if I named my daughter that way it would evoke thoughts of store-bought brownies.

Dog names are hard. My future gun dog is going to be a male Yellow Lab, and I am going to name him Ace. Guy names are way cooler like Zeus! I did a seach once on "dog name ideas" and a lot of stuff came up. It's just like getting a tattoo, you have to see it before you know what you want!

Mine is Maggie and you will be tested that first year, mine is 14 months and still on the go but getting better.
How about Remington or SIG

Well, as long as we're posting pictures of our dogs -

Here's Suzi, my beagle

I haven't decided if my dog is smart or stupid
His name is Dozer but my wife can't pronounce that so she calls him Jo-Jo, my son calls him Boo Boo and my ex who spends time with him calls him Clyde because she likes that name better.

He will answer to any of those names only if the right person uses it..

MY father's old field dog was named Tick, because she was usually one big walking tick bed

What they all say about labs- ITS TRUE

My black lab (has some newfoundland, supposedly, too) bailey is incredibly human like.

And he makes sounds like a wookie when he wants to play and no one will play with him :p But he has the sharpest dang bark when hes annoyed.

Does anyone else have, when you give your dog a treat, right before he goes to grab it, his eyes get real wide and you can see the whites in em?

When i noticed this i nearly fell over and the floor laughing. His eyes got so widwe for a split second!

1911 Tuner,

Big AMEN!

As an owner of two labs, a black male and a yellow female I wholeheartedly agree with you.

I know the original poster wanted "gun-related" names, but the lab female knows!

I'll have to chime in with:
Dani (that's what we named our yellow female)
Lily
McKenzie
Molly
Dakota

jcs, congratulations on your new addition to the family. Labradors, are my favorite breed. You have more than just a dog, you have a companion.

-Jim

you must use a two, three syllable word that has hard consanents in it, this will be more easily heard by your dog, in loud crowded areas. such as pee -pie, barkie,
crackers, smuckers, shakespeare, sodapop, baby, chicky, marbles, etc.

I just got a new bird dog and we almost named her "Zoot"!

When she is bad we of course would say...."naughty, naughty Zoot!"

I may have to steal that one! :D

I got it!!!! I got it!!!!

You could name her the same as my dog!!! his name is..........

GETYERASSOFFTHECOUCH!!!

But seriously......

Pictures would be nice, So we could take physical attributes into consideration! Like if she has no legs, It don't matter what you call her.......she AINT comin'!..........:D

ur daughter is lovely

Yeah, she's a pretty good kid. She's 34, single and makes about $80K annually with her own real estate company. Only problem is she's a Clintonite Kalifornian and very definitely anti-gun. Of course, that didn't stop her from having a gun when she lived in a rough section of Atlanta during college. Typical anti- hypocracy, it's okay for me, but not for you. Yes, we've had some heated debates!

She's a bitch, right? How about Hillary?

The most origional name I heard was....DOG. It was pronounced DEE- O-GEE though, like the letters. Food for thought.
