What Caliber and Gun is Best for a Man?

and of course, being a woman, has 50% less upper body strength than a man
Hmmm...nobody told me that when I was hanging sheetrock by myself (or if they did, I didn't listen). The body does what you tell it to do.

What gun for a man?

Look, I don't care what anyone says, it is inhumane to hunt them with anything smaller than a 9mm.

Better still, a 12-gauge pump-action shotgun both sounds manly, and allows the man to use his usually well-developed gross motor skills.
Who said 12 ga pump? I heard 12 ga pump!

Course, I got a 9mm, too, and everyone on THR knows a 9mm is a pansy pistol.

I got it cause it fits my small hands.

Kinda like my SW 642: fits my small hands.

But hey: somebody said '12 ga pump'. Fess up!

Dang it, woman. You beat me to my punchline.

Which means it's your gender's fault for the shape this Earth is in. :neener:

OK, there are NOT going to be any verbal missiles in this thread.

Have I made myself clear?

Depends on my mood and method of dress as much as anything else. May grab the 5" S&W 625 Wheel gun, may grab the KelTec P32. May pick something in between.

Hmmm . Can a man be fickle?

Edited: Ok. This is it. Last time I post before reading the entire thread.

My observations:

Generally a "man's caliber" shouldn't be metric, unless it has some sort of mystique like the 10mm, and it should begin with at least a 4. However, there is the old trick of adding the word "Magnum" after calibers less than .40 which raises the Machismo Value considerably. It's agreed, I think, that the use of the term Magnum with calibers over .40 gets into a whole 'nother level of testosterone!

I work in the motorcycle industry. I get asked all the time "where are the girl bikes?", but it's usually by some guy who drank the leather outfit and no helmet kool-aid who has his female walking 2 steps behind. (can you tell I don't like these guys?)
My reply is always "I've been all over these bikes, and I have yet to find one with a uterus."
Note:*I have no problem with chaps, no helmets, or HD kool aid drinkers. It's your money, do what you want. I don't like the mysogyny endemic to the culture.*

I'd say it's the same with guns. I've seen the know it all gun guy swagger into the gun shop, woman two steps behind, and heard him ask in a loud voice "I'm lookin' for a woman's gun for her!"

ridiculous.

I get the point, too.

I see a lot of that (gender bias) in my work, machining. Most machinists are men, but I've seen some good women machinists. Tell Kim Rhodes that men are better with a 12 guage. As for pistol fit, I've got long fingers, but my palms are on the small side of average, so thick gripped double stack autos don't do it for me. 1911's all the way. BTW, I don't mind recoil, but don't get off on the wrist and shoulder breakers some use. On the other hand, I know one man who genuinely LIKES recoil, the mammoth stuff doesn't bother him a bit.

Pax... i often carry an itty-bitty Smitty and it even SAYS "LadySmith" on it... but i have always preferred the company of a true lady. :)

I'm 6'-3", 250 lbs, and manly as they come... (just ask my GF) and it doesn't bother me a bit to carry a "girly gun"... sometimes, though, i gotta haul out my Desert Eagle, or my Contender in 45-70 and carry the "big iron" :p

Seriously tho, home defense handguns are about the fit of the hand and how much recoil your willing to put up with.
Whats in your crotch wont affect that choice.

Honestly, I think this was an excellent post Pax, hopefully the cavemen get it.

My friends have beentelling me I should get my GF a .38 or a 9mm, and I've been saying, "We don't carry anything that doesn't start with a '4' and end with a '5' in this house". But of course I am joking. She can carry whatever she wants, as long as she's proficient and comfortable with it and she carries it.

However, she made me durn proud when, not knowing the caliber, she picked out a couple of 1911's in my gun pics and said, "Those look nice, what are they and what's the difference between those and another gun?". I think she wants one now. :D

Of course, she also has to carry a stun gun, house rules (for both of us BTW, this is not a sexist thing).

Btw, Alduro, that was about the funniest post I've read in a week. Thanks for making my night!

Glad you like it. My wife always tells me how unfunny I am.

BTW have you guys ever considered the word magnum? I'm thinking of a marketing pitch. Everything sounds way more masucline with "magnum" attached to it. Let's try:

I'll have the "Magnum" chocolate double dipped cone please.

or

I'll buy some briefs, the Haynes Magnums. (underwear labled magnum will certainly sell)

or

One Magnum double latte'. (you can even make Starbucks sound like a John Wayne drink)

or

I've got a magnum hemi (dang, someone beat me to it). Oh well.

when i am carrying it around i want a keltec or tomcat sized gun. If i need to use it in a gun fight i want that new super mag auto that shoots the 25MM bushmaster round, I mean, you never feel recoil in a stress situation, so why not go for something that does indeed have knock down power.

Mm/WsA=Minimum Caliber

Mm=Manlyness (or mysogyny)

Ws= Winky size

A= Age

The minimum caliber required by an individual is a direct function of their perceived Manlyness or mysogyny and inversly proportional to the size of their Winky or Age

My Man-Gun

Is an entirely ceramic hammerless snub-nose revolver chambered for .505 Lott. It weighs less than a single bullet, and recoils so hard when I first used it I totally kicked my grandma in the face and we both screamed.

It is like a tiny god.

By the way, Alduro--if your Man Gun doesn't have a forearm slide to rack, you are missing out on a well-known truism of the pump shotgun: When a bad guy hears the slide rack, something brown happens.

In all seriousness, Man must try gun. Many gun. Only then will man know gun. And while my primary carry is a .45, I'm pretty comfortable with anything that propels small metallic projectiles at high speed using a fast-burning chemical composition. For instance, I have a not-quite-wholesome fascination with my fiance's Sig P232. It's so sleek, if it had a tail it'd be an otter.

hso, so, how does that work for me? I've carried a 1911 in .45 since I was a teenager. Have not had any complaints.:D :uhoh:

It is single stack isn't it?

In your case you're safe since the Mm term is essentially nonexistant and therefore have a minimum caliber requirement of 0.:neener: (see, it's an empty hand joke :)scrutiny: get it, "empty hand") because ElT is a martial arts practioner... wellitwasfunnywhenIfirstthoughtofit:rolleyes: )

KIdding (on my part) aside, my lighthearted take-off as a quasi-caveman (post #30) not withstanding, I whole-heartedly agree. This is a great thread that's needed to happen.

I'm hoping to see more along a common theme of challenging long standing misconceptions and stereotypes, and done with such literary flair.

Nice job, Ms. Pax.

On the other hand, men often have emotional difficulty shooting smaller guns, feeling perhaps that such guns are not "manly" enough, so smaller guns might be best left unconsidered even when a smaller gun might otherwise be a good choice.
My "always" gun is an S&W 340SC. Loaded, with Crimson Trace laser grips, this small gun weighs less than a pound. I've never felt it was too diminutive to be a good choice.

A person who fires this little revolver with full power .357 ammo will not regard it as a "lady's gun" . . . nor would I let a lady shoot this small little gun unless she was an experienced shooter and knew what she was getting into.

What Caliber and Gun is Best for a Man?
that would be 45 caliber SIG P220
