I just recently picked up a new (to me) vz24 sporter (untouched by bubba) in .30-06. The trigger isn't that bad for a milsurp, but it sure is heavy. I'm thinking I'd like to replace the trigger. Does anyone have any opinions on the Timney ones with the built in safety? How much fitting/stock work is required to install one? Is the trigger/sear/however the safety works sufficient for hiking around in the woods? (This will be a hunting rifle, not a target/safe queen) The idea of using the trigger safety rather than the noisy bolt safety is rather appealing, if it's not too much trouble to install, is sufficiently safe, and ends up with a decent (though not too light) trigger.

Opinions?

Thanks in advance for the advice,
NateG

I've not used the Timney with the safety. I did install the other model in a Turk Mauser; had to do a little inletting(not much) to clear the trigger housing, and it is a wonderful trigger.

Before you do that, have you tried the usual? Polish the face of the cocking piece, polish the sear face and use a lighter/cut shorter trigger spring? That can make a world of difference.

You should be able to install the Timney yourself. It is straightforward. You may have to inlet it into the stock, and you will definitely have to remove wood to get the safety into the stock. You may have to file a bit on the bolt shroud so that it will clear the new safety. On some Mausers you have to take a bit of metal from the inside of the trigger guard. That is best done with a milling machine and an end mill, but it could be done with a Dremel. The photo below shows a trigger guard milled for a Timney trigger installation.
