My new Mossberg

I got a Mossberg 500 for my birthday. So yesterday a couple friends and I went to the range with some paper and different ammo loads. We patterned bot my Remington 870 and my Mossberg 500. We also played with some slugs and buckshot.

The first slug I shot through my mossberg, I wasn't prepared for quite so much recoil and didn't have my face on the stock like I should have, I wound up punching myself with my thumb...I won't be making that mistake again.:D

But with it's modified choke in, my mossberg patterned quite nicley using Remington Game club loads.

After we had patterned for a bit we had brought some empty water bottles to use as reactive targets and filled them in a nearby creek. That was alot of fun. There was another gentleman at the range and as he was leaving he offerd us an old plastic jug he had in his truck if we wanted something a bit bigger than a water bottle. We gladly accepted. I had been trying to use my camer to get shots of our waterbottles exploding but was too slow on the shutter. Well...I managed to get some pictures of the jug exploding. I took the pictures while my two firends used my Mossberg and remington and doubble slugged it. (sorry the're kind of blurry)

I realy am not sure if i prefer one or the other yet. I've put almost 200 rounds through the Remington so it feels more familiar, but this was my first time shooting the mossberg. It shoots realy well and feels good in my hands. The remingrton has a little more weight to it so I feel more recoil when I shoot the mossberg. I need to shoot both a bit more before I decide if I like one more than the other.

Sounds like a good day, Medgrl. Congrats on your B Day present. You've a pair of good'uns there. Enjoy....

Thank you for sharing, I have really enjoyed reading your progress in the world of shotgunning.

Here you have already shot 200 rds from a 12 ga, been taking lessons, practicing, pattern testing guns...and what do you do with a new gun...pattern the darn thing! GREAT!!

;) Don't you read the Internet? One is not supposed be able to shoot a bone stock shotgun! You have to piddle, fiddle, and bolt stuff onto and off of it! ;)

You have a pair of nice guns, now you need a 28 ga and a .410 to have "completed your first set".

I do not want to interfere with your shooting, or any instructions you are taking.

Some folks do not put the shooting thumb over the stock, intead keep it "aside" the stock.
Sometimes a bad mount happens, other times one is shooting a shorter LOP shotgun, be it a youth model , or one set up to use with a vest. Thumb does not hit face, if anything, portion of hand below thumb will, less painful as there is more area that hits, and softer than a knuckle.
