As a Texan (yeah I live in Houston, no football jokes:evil: ) I am very fortunate to have a small piece of the Lone Star State (about 30 acres) to enjoy and ride herd on. Even have a 100 yard range on it (but gas prices have curtailed some of my "property checks":fire: ). The surrounding land belongs to aunts and cousins so I guess we have close to 700 acres to tend.

When I go to walk the property I usually bring my Yugo SKS, or my Mossberg pump and either my Ruger Standard Model, 6" barrel or my H&R Mod. 622, 2 1/2" on my hip. What you pack to check your back 40:D ?

BTW my cousin that actually caretakes the land has a Win 94, Rem. 870 and a Gew 43 to protect the homestead.

ruger security six .357 4" barrel goes on my belt in the morning and stays there till i go to bed - whether around the house, walking on my land or the neighboring ranch, feeding the horses, going for a horseback ride, etc

Packin' pistols

You need packin' pistols. While a 1911A1 is always a good choice for every occasion, I prefer single action revolvers for walkin' property. You should have a big ole centerfire hogleg like a Blackhawk 44 magnum or a Single Action Army in .45 Colt, and you need a .22 rimfire for plinking.

I would carry my S&W 65 in 357 mag, it has a 4" pencil barrel installed and a round grip frame.

If I were carryin' a rifle it would be a Marlin 1894C with either the S&W 65 previously mentioned or a S&W 13 3" or a Colt Woodsman 6".

There are two friends that let me hunt their farms, here in North FL. In return, I help keep an eye on the property for them. Often, I will just drive over, park along the road, and walk in through the woods, so I can approach the house unseen. On both farms, the houses are set off the road, and not visible.
I usually take a .22 S&W revolver, and depending on whats been going on, I sometimes take a Ruger Mini-14 or Bushmaster A2 carbine.

That's what horses are for :D Get a scabbard and a .30-.30!
I have a tiny yard right now. Eventually I hope to have 30+ acres and I'll probably tote my AR and a 1911 on my hip (or a XD .45).

Ruger New Vaquero (replacing the Blackhawk) in .357 on my hip. First two chambers are loaded with snakeshot. If I know I'm going to be clearing brush I'll switch to a S&W 637 instead (stays out of the way better).

The $100 Yugo SKS rides on the tractor.

On my four acres I just take the dog (7 month old Lab-Corgi mix) along for protection when I feed the goats. I have dispatched some fearsome possums up close on the rear deck with my Walther TPH. For the longer shots I rely on my 1930's vintage Stevens Favorite and Aguila Colibre's...+P's.

Depends on my mood.

Traditional: 6" Model 15 .357 Dan Wesson, and a Winchester 1894 Trapper in the same caliber.

Tacticool: 10mm Glock 20 and a Hungarian AMD in 7.62x39.

Wiley kjeff20cal,

I thought that was what last years BBQ gun was for.

How did you know I had a BBQ Gun???:D
But it is a little barrel light to put in a Threepersons Holster:evil:

When i am up in cougar / bear country, i take my 6" 686 with doubletap 158gr with me. When in the flatter country (usually varmint hunting), my G17 gets oc'd. For a long rifle, my AR works for me. If for some reason i think its likely I am going to run into a bear, i'd take my 870 and load it with slugs.

I usually have my Ruger P89. Sometimes I take the XD45 Tactacial. Of course the Marlin 30-30 is alway's in the pick-up.

Right now, my Stoeger Coach Gun when I'm checking the deer lease or the land around my home. I carry it with buckshot/slugs when I'm over at a small piece of land my father bought last year, because it's home to some 300-400 pound hogs. :scrutiny: Maybe I need a bigger gun.

However, when my Mosin Nagant comes in, I'll be carrying that. :D Nothing like defending the motherland.

Now that you mention it, here is the wife's ranch-rig (M1911 in buscadero), complete with her other defensive option, Max the Dog:

Last time I rode the (anyone's) back 40 I was packing a Colt 1917 New Service Army .45acp crossdraw and was bundled up surplus wool and an army parka (it was 20 degrees or so and windy) with a .223 AK across my saddle.

Didn't see any coyotes, but it sure kept the rustlers away.
Kind of 'Red Dawn' with an AK on horseback.

I usually carry a Glock 23, sometimes I alternate with a S&W 3913.
During Deer Gun, when the risk of encountering an armed interloper increases, I sometimes carry an AR15. The only predators I worry about are the two legged ones.

I ride my family's backwoods on my ATV with a pump shotgun in the gun rack for snakes and strap on my S/W Model 29(5 inch chopped) loaded with 44 Specials for walking in the woods.
