Hi, everyone! I've been a reader for a while, but this is my first post.

I've been interested in surplus rifles for a little bit now, and finally can say I have one. I went to the show today looking for a swiss K31, but due to the fact that there were only 2 that I saw (both overpriced), I ended up leaving with a Yugo SKS (59/66) imported by Century and 200 rounds of ammo.

I almost picked up a nice looking 91/30 with a hex receiver, but I ended up getting this instead.

The only problem I've found so far is that the cleaning rod doesn't want to screw in place, so it rattles around.

Yeah... I've been reading up on the C&R license. I'm planning on getting one so my new SKS can have some company.

This cost $129, I think that's a decent price... Most of the C&R places I've looked at have been fairly on par with that number, if not higher.

Well Done!!!

Nice rifle! Welcome to the 'Road. You made a great purchase on that Yugo. What you gonna track down next? A nice 91/30 or M44 Moisin Nagant would be a nice addition. Let us know how your SKS shoots.

That's a great price these days, and a fun rifle. BTW the cleaning rod is not supposed to screw into place - it's only trapped in by the bayonet.

Please take out the bolt and check the firing pin channel for leftover cosmoline before you fire it. The firing pin should rattle around in the bolt if it's clean. If it isn't, you stand a decent chance of a runaway slamfire sooner or later.

Cheers, and welcome to the board!

Thanks!

I do see the cleaning rod is "locked" in place by the bayonet. It was rattling around, and when I pulled it out, I noticed it had threads on the end, so I figured it threaded in. I have the gun completely disassembled and I see there is nothing for it to thread into. Is this normal to have a threaded rod with nothing to thread into, or is my cleaning rod from another variant? All the numbers I can find on the gun are matching, so I have no other reason to believe its not original. It's really the only thing making a lot of noise (other than the sling loop on the stock)... Oh well.

The firing pin does move freely, but I'm still throughly cleaning the gun.

My next purchase probably will be a 91/30, then maybe (hopefully) a K31 after that.

Its threaded so you can screw the brushes and what not onto it...so you can clean your gun :)

in the butstock there is a little round hole.....put your finger in there and you should find the rest of your cleaning kit, its spring loaded, be carefull with your finger :D ......you may already know about the kit, sorry if its old info.

I installed tech-sights on one of my SKS's today, very nice indeed, big improvement over standard sights.

The SKS is an amazing value at around $125 - $175. Of course some varients are considerably more than the Yugo's.

A lot of good info there, the right column is all about the SKS. The left column leads you to other mil-surps.

Good Luck!

Mike

SKSs are fun, but if you have an accuracy bug, don't give up on the K31. AIM and Classicarms both have good reputations for nice K31s.

Yes, I hope to find a nice K31. It would probably be my first purchase with a C&R.

My cleaning kit in the stock is missing. I'll have to see if I can get a replacement.

Weaselchew, that's not a bad price at all for a Yugo SKS at the funshow. It looks to be a very good- condition rifle which with shipping would be about the same from an online dealer. Is the bore in good shape.? Only problem with some of the Yugo's is since they are not chrome-lined and they used corrosive ammo some of the bores are sewer pipes. Also like other posters mentioned make SURE that the firing pin moves freely in the bolt. If not you can have a full auto SKS when your not expecting it. And yes, get you a K31 while you can.:D

BTW: Welcome to the High Road!
