I am unsure when dad bought this rifle. I think it was somtime in the early 90s as he didn't have it when I left for the Army (1988) and he had it when I returned (1996). He says it came form a shop that has since been torn down (Black Sheep here in Boise). I remembers getting a phone call from the owner asking for it back and that the clerk never should have sold this rifle. Dad refused. Dad came down with cancer 5 years ago. His treatments have left him somwhat a shell of his older self and had retired from big game hunting. This summer he sent this rifle home with me. His original intent was to swap it for an auto-loading 30-06 he could shoot due to the low recoil.

After talking with some folks locally, I have learned that this rifle should not exsist in this configuration. Calls to Winchester came up with no record of this serial number leaving thier factory and the guy on the phone said that no record means it came from the Custom Shop and that thier historian would have the info on it. Since the Custom Shop is now closed, they only have one historian and he is not very good at answering his phone much less returning calls.

So here is your chance. Are there any Winchester experts or anyone in the know who can give up any info regarding this rifle? How about collectors who can give an idea where it came from (Special order custom or distributer special?) How about worth? any guesses? If it were in your shop, what would you ask retail?

Specs:

Winchester M70 Sport Magnum XTR in .338 Win Mag, Lam Stock with factory recoil pad and grip cap. Has less than 100 rounds through it. (too much for my tastes and dad was a "3 round a year" hunter. Serial is G2042xxx.

I have the same rifle.

I have that same rifle. I purchased mine when I lived in Colorado. The laminate stock broke and I put a McMillian in it. I would be happy to send you some pictures.
If I remember right I purchased it for around 400-500.

Oh, it is a nice rifle. I am not fond of magnums. Dont like the recoil or the 70+ grains of powder to reload them. I am a 30-06 kind of guy.

Win-Tuff

Model 70 Sporter Win-Tuff they were also made in green laminated (Win-Cam) or the brown like yours. Nothing extra special other then it's a push feed Model 70, least desireable. Most XTR's were MFG'd before 1989. It's worth about $400.00 to $800.00 depending on how badly one wants a Model 70. My 2 cents. BT
