I just picked up my M1 from fedex yesterday. Its great i cant make it stop going PING. Its a field grade and looks great, there is some pitting but very little and the steel finish is great, the wood looks "bad" but i dont care it does what it should. And lots of the parts look as if there is little wear.:D

I just have 2 questions.

Right under the front site, on the gas cylinder right under the front site, there is a cut on both side that goes half way down the gas cylinder part that goes around the barrel. I cant find a picture of an m1 with that cut on it, so i am guessing its not supposed to be there. Will it affect the M1?

Also all the wood seems to fit tight, but the front hand gaurd seems to wiggle a bit is that normal.

Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving, I will add pics when i go to work. On friday

I believe the cut was made to tighten up the gas cylinder.

Yes, the top handguards should be loose, as opposed to rock solid tight.

Ocabj - Do you know what the purpose of the saw-cut is?

It almost looks like when that cut is drawn together by tightening the front sight, it might help lock the gas cyl to the barrel. But then, the way its cut, it doesn't leave a whole lot of metal on the rear of the dovetail, which could make it prone to breakage.

Someone already mentioned the correct purpose of the cut, which is to snug the gas cylinder. The exact details were that some barrels were contoured incorrectly in the gas port area. The saw cut solution was found to fix those issues. You usually see this only in narrow base gas cylinders (early years) because it was a certain run during the early years where the barrel flaw was found.

The one in that picture posted is of a wide base gas cylinder, but it probably found it's way onto one of those flawed barrels.

As far as that small part of the front sight dovetail, no, it doesn't seem like it will break off. Matter of fact, I had a Hell of a time trying to get the front sight off. Had to let some oil soak into it and then drift it out.

My m1 was made in july 1945, or at least the receiver was. Is that early production seems kind of late, unless of course my barrel was made before the receiver
