Installed some Pachmayr grips on my stainless Springfield 1911 GI. I think they look really nice, because of the combination of rubber and wood. They make the gun feel awesome, even better than it already did.

One of my best friends gave me a USMC Ka-Bar for my birthday, so I took a pic with it too. :D

I've had the same pair of (ugly) grips on my GI 45 for 30+ years.
The minute I installed them I knew they were the way to go.
I like the looks of them now.

I've never liked finger groves on grips though. Don't seem to match my hand.

I bought those Pachmayrs the day I bought my first 1911, and dropped them just as quick.
I agree that they look very distinctive, but I felt they were low quality.
On the plus side, they make your Springer look like one of 47's silverballers from the Hitman games.

The rubber on my Pachmayrs did not sit flush with the wood on both sides.
The rubber grooves were also too pronounced and collapsed too easily.
The wood got marred easily, and left a much lighter mark.
The extended safety on my 1911 was clipping the wood and it loked really bad.

So I ordered some Pierce grip extenders, and slapped on some medallion grips, and I'm much happier.
The rubber is much firmer on the Pierce grips, and I find them more comfortable.
The Colt grips have been dented by the safety just as much, but there is no discoloration so the dents are almost invivible.

I'm with M2. I have a pair of Pachmayrs on my nickel Commander. Looks good and shoots good.

On my grips I cut off the front panel and use just the side grips. This slims the grips a bit and makes the Commander easier to shoot.

Sorry to hear that you had trouble with them. The rubber fits perfectly flush on my set, and the finger grooves feel pretty good (in my opinion).

Also, what in the heck is a "47 silverballer"? I'm not familiar with these Hitman games you speak of.

Recoil dampening is effective....Makes the hurt feel good.....:) However, through trial & error, I've found that mature, Ostrich skin is simply the best.

Haha, hearing all this talk about wood grips I feel like such a heretic for putting Hogue rubber on my 1911s. I still think they look much better than the Pachmayr wood/rubber combination, but then to each his own. :D
