I think the Colt is dimensionally a bit larger, also you could at one time get 2 cylinders for the Colt, to shoot 45 Colt as well as 45 ACP, I don't think the Smith can do that. The Colt weighs about 40oz.

Here a Colt version, unfortunately somewhere along the way someone decided to give it a gloss blue refinish.

6 Gunner I also have one chopped to 3 1/4" and by coincidence I also paid $300.00 for it this spring.

Are you sure it originally had a different finish? Some of the early guns had a polished blue finish, and I believe there were commercial versions of the 1917's, at least from Smith, not sure about Colt. I guess from Colt they would be "New Service" models in commercial guise, tho they may have sold commercial 1917's also.

Not sure unfortunately is the right word here, because the finish in the pic looks awesome.:D That really is a great pic, elric. If that bad ole Colt is botherin' you, I'll be glad to zip on down to Austin and take it off your hands. You might sleep better:evil:

Here is an original 1917 Colt in original finish. Someone in the past drilled a tiny hole through the front sight.

I bought this one years ago for a project gun. My brother had one with a real bad finish but otherwise good fit and lockup. He had the barrel cut back to 3" the grip frame rounded, and the whole thing satin nickeled. I made one of the sweetest carry/pack guns you ever saw. I wanted to do the same, but just couldn't bring myself to have it cut and refinished.

This is a US GI one, near the end of the run. I doubt it would have had such a high gloss blue originally.

Its just unfortunate that it had to be refinished. They did a pretty good job, but there must have been some rust/pitting on the sideplate since they polished the Colt horsey nearly off to get the surface ready for rebluing.

As I recall, the M1917s were originally blued. A parked finish would indicate refurbishment about the time of WWII. Of course, that doesn't mean your gun hasn't been reblued.

Here's my 1917 S&W Heritage model from the early 2000's. For those who want to tell me how it's not exactly like the originals, I already know, so spare me. Or not, make yourself happy. I took off the lanyard ring, and Roy Fishpaw made a set of Sambar stag grips, and I'm happy. Unfortunately;) it doesn't have the "hole", so it doesn't give even more people a reason to froth at the mouth, but you can't have everything.
