Does anyone know the procedure for getting "collector status" in MD? I called the MDSP in Jessup and was connected to a operator (female) who was'nt exactly a wealth of information. She couldn't tell me much about the procedure, form #, waiting period to have processed, or anything else. She seemed absolutly sure however that she could not mail or fax me the forms. She also went on to say that only that one station (her's) can distribute the forms, so you can't even have them sent to a local MDSP station and pick them up from there. It just seems odd to me that if someone (from the other end of the state wants to get collector status they may have to drive several hundred miles to pick up a blank form. Just doesn't sound right to me. :scrutiny: I think I may want to get this before the next Govenor (MOM) takes office, as many expect the state laws to be under review soon after. :cuss:

I printed my form right off the MSP website. It took about 30 days to get the reply letter back stating that they approved my application.

MD Collector

Getting this is relatively easy - fill out the paperwork pay the fee (I think it was $0.00) and wait. The advantage is that you can purchase more than one gun a month. Now that I have moved out of the state it is useless.

Mine was faxed to me.
Getting a sergeant at the MDSP Firearms division on the phone can be a real pain in the ass, but once you do the process is easy.
Once I got mine I got it signed and then I think I had to get my signature notarised and then all I did was send the application back to them at Jessup. I had problems with NICS and so mine took a while, but other people who have done it were designated as a collector in a week or two.

Go here and there was a thread about this very thing http://www.mdshooters.com/

The Form is: Maryland State Police Regulated Firearms Collector Application and Affidavit. The form number is MSP 77C

I submitted mine and it only took 7 days for me to get "Collector" status.

What does it mean? It just means that I submitted a piece of paper to ask the Socialist State to regrant me my constitutional rights.

Fill out the paper, get a notary to certify it and send it off.

Enjoy...

I have had one for approximately 10 years. I was buying a lot of the old H&R and Iver Johnson, and etc. top break revolvers. Some used terms such as "Auto Ejector" in their names.

In April 2005 I received a letter from the MSP Firearms Section in Jessup. Letter only contained a "Annual Machine Gun Registration Form 2005-2006". No other correspondence explaining why I received this Form.

I contacted a MSP Sgt in the Firearms Section, who told me I received the form because I "owned a machine gun". I advised him that I had never owned an automatic firearm; nor did I have a desire to own one. When asked how they had come to that conclusion, he checked my "file" and said I had a .32 Iver Johnson Hammerless "auto ejector" gun listed in my possession.

When informed that this was an old top break revolver hand gun, he told me to disregard the form & that he would take care of it. Didn't argue with me, just accepted my explanation.

Not reassured, and not wanting to experience a 5 AM "Dynamic Entry". I recontacted the MSP Firearms Section again approximately a month later. Same MSP Sgt., (Yes,I have his name), answered the phone, Immediately recalled my previous call and told me it was taken care of.

Don't know how this transpired prior to sending me the letter, but I suspect they performed some type of scan of my handgun purchases made with the Collector's License.

What really bothered me, was that they just sent the application, without any explanation of why it was being sent. Nothing stating why I was being sent the form; no dead line for submitting the form; and no explanation of the penalty for not submitting it. It kind of smacked of some type of entrapment, especially if I had ignored it and not made the phone call. What could of happened is just a matter of conjecture.

They could have done this even if you didn't have a collector's license. Something to do with the handy extra form you fill out every time you buy a handgun or EBR.

It helps (but is not necessary) to belong to a collector club or organization. Plus it is fun to meet other collectors at meetings and swap information.

So, if you can, join a collector club. Most gun shops know the ones in the area.
