Is there anybody in California here who had to take the HSC test?
I would like to know your honest opinion about the test.
Do you recommend taking a class or is the CA HSC Study Guide good enough?

Thank you in advance for your opinions.

Test

The test is STUPID. If you can't pass using common sense you don't deserve one. I didn't study or read the book. I went in paid the fee and took the test. One answer incorrect: What direction do you point a gun? I said UP. Wrong Answer. Correct Answer: is in a safe direction. example given was what if you lived in an apartment building? Up might be the person living above you. I live in a house.

If you feel the need read the book but you shouldn't need much more. Did you pass your driveres License exam? same basic common sense questions.

Good luck...not that you'll need it.:)

The test is extremely basic. Read the book thoroughly, but you will be able to pass it using simple common sense. If you can read, you definitely do not need a course. Save your money for a good defensive pistol course.

+1 to g5's analysis. One addition: there are one or two questions where the answer is the "PC" answer, not the most reasonable answer. They're pretty obvious.

If a small child finds an unattended firearm, he/she should immediately:
A) Pick it up, and determine what make/model it is
B) Find a friend to show it to
C) Leave and tell a trusted adult
D) Pull the trigger to see if it's loaded

That's the basic idea. Very simple, and easy. I'd still recommend reading over the study guide, but it's almost entirely based around common-sense.

I decided to give it a shot without reading the book, figured it would be fairly logical. I did not miss any, just keep in mind that they want the legal answer written by an anti-gunner, not the "best" real world answer.

A person familiar with reasonable gun use and safety should do well.

I never scored anything below 100% on the silly HSC test.

Not after I took/paid for first one which was "good for life"

Not after I took/paid for the second one either when the first one was deemed expired.

Probably will ace the next one too, and the one a month after that, and the one the following day...

The test is easy. I never even read the booklet. I just took the test & figured I'd read the booklet if I didn't pass the 1st time through. I got 100% & bought a handgun soon after ;) It's mostly common sense and you can get up to 7 wrong & still pass :D

Just a quick ditto to the above posts. You figured out how to log onto the internet. You can pass the HSC test.

+1 to everybody else. Really, anyone who can't pass the HSC test is someone who doesn't need to be handling a firearm anyway - I sure wouldn't want to be anywhere near them while they were!

Taking a class for the HSC is... wow. I can only imagine the easy money I've been missing out on as an HSC instructor.

What is the proper way to store a firearm?

A) In a closet
B) In a gun safe
C) In a blast furnace

:neener:

read the guide, do fine

I read the guide, it was straight forward. The only question I got wrong was the minimum age - it's differerent for rifles than it is for pistols. My mom took it and passed, it's not hard.
